The Citywide Star Party, which will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. May 3 at Jeffrey Park, 165 N. Parkview Ave., is among the events that will be held in Bexley for the first COSI Science Festival.
The festival will take place Wednesday, May 1, through May 4 at various sites around central Ohio and is expected to be among the largest science events in Ohio history, featuring four days of events showcasing science in local communities, COSI President and CEO Frederic Bertley said.
"COSI cannot put on this festival of four days of events...by ourselves," he said. "We don't have the staff or the capacity. The key to make this work is through partnerships. They've been the bread and butter. That includes the 12 city mayors that have agreed to work with us.
"Putting this on at this scale has been possible through the partnerships we've been able to set up, and those partnerships helped us pick the sites."
Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler asked the Recreation and Parks Department to take the lead on organizing local activities, Recreation Director Michael Price said.
"The whole concept of the COSI Science Festival is to get everyone engaged in learning that there's science in everyday things that we do," he said. "At the very least, getting the community to think about how things work or how things are made and the science that goes into it, especially for young people, will spark a passion in something they hadn't otherwise thought about. If nothing else, it's designed to be a lot of fun."
The Citywide Star Party at Jeffrey Park will include an inflatable planetarium, air and water rocket launching, "Skype with an Astronaut" sessions, arts and crafts, and inflatable rides. From 9 to 10 p.m., participants can use telescopes provided by COSI to map the stars. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own telescopes and star-gazing smartphone apps.
"We'll have some food trucks there just to bring the festival feeling to it," said Natalie Mullin, recreation supervisor.
The Citywide Star Party is free and registration is not required. For a complete list of COSI Science Festival events in Bexley, visit bexley.org/cosi.
