A Hilliard man was arrested May 25 on a weapons-related charge and is facing probable drug-related charges after he had barricaded himself inside a residence for more than three hours, according to the Hilliard Division of Police.

Columbus Division of Police SWAT officers took 38-year-old Ryan D. Beal into custody at his Hamilton Road residence, according to Sgt. Kris Settles.

Settles said Beal lived with a woman there. A woman had left the residence near the start of the incident, according to Deputy Chief Eric Grile.

Beal cooperated once he was confronted by the SWAT team, said Andrea Litchfield, a Hilliard police spokeswoman.

He was charged with having weapons while under disability, she said.

It remains unclear what led to the incident, Litchfield said.

Officers had been dispatched at 3:37 p.m. to the residence on Hamilton Road, she said. A third party called police to report a disturbance, she said.

The woman who left the Hamilton Road residence also called police, Grile said.

Hamilton Road near Norwich Street was closed during the incident, he said. Officers also closed Norwich at both Grove Street and Linda Road. Hamilton Road is in the middle of Hilliard, south of the Franklin County Fairgrounds.

The SWAT team arrived on the scene during the incident.

Neighbors were advised to shelter in place, Lt. Ron Clark said. However, some residents watched the scene unfold while seated in golf carts until a passing rain shower caused many to go back indoors.

After Beal was arrested, officers found suspected narcotics inside the residence, Litchfield said.

Those substances will be sent to a laboratory for testing and additional charges are pending the results of those tests, she said.

Beal has a history with local police.

In April 2018, he was charged with driving under a license forfeiture, Litchfield said.

Twice in September 2017, he was charged with driving with a suspended license, she said.

Records also show the Dublin Police Department has charged Beal for a drug-related incident, Litchfield said.
