Westerville City Schools' three high school marching bands, with a combined membership of 222 students, are prepared to entertain crowds with some music from the past and present this season.

Westerville Central and South high schools will present their first half-time shows on Friday, Aug. 30, with Westerville North following on Sept. 6.

Westerville Central

Westerville Central Warhawk Marching Band director Douglas Hildreth said the season has started well.

"We have a great group of students, numbers are up from last year and the music and drill are coming along very well," he said.

Hildreth said the 73-member band includes field commanders Jake Bibbo and Macy Pritchard.

The first home halftime show on Aug. 30 will feature the music of Queen, Hildreth said.

The theme of Central's homecoming halftime show Oct. 4 will be karaoke favorites.

Other scheduled special performances and competitions include:

* Sept. 7: The Westerville Central Classic on Central's Warhawk field.

* Sept. 21: The Massillon Tiger Band Review in Paul Brown Stadium in Massillon.

* Sept. 28: The Ohio State Buckeye Invitational in Ohio Stadium.

* Oct. 12: The New Albany Band Show at New Albany High School.

The band is supported by the Westerville Central Music Boosters.

Westerville North

The Westerville North Warrior Marching Band is being led by new director Sara Loney.

Loney said she is excited to be a part of the teaching staff of Westerville North and to be part of the Westerville community.

She said she looks forward to an exciting, fun and successful year with all 49 of the students in the Warrior Marching Band.

It is comprised of five seniors, 12 juniors, 15 sophomores, 10 freshmen and seven eighth-graders.

Loney said the band's competition show is entitled "Heart."

The homecoming show will be held Sept. 20.

Scheduled special performances and competitions include:

* Sept. 28: Ohio Music Education Association Competition at Watkins Memorial High School.

* Oct. 5: OMEA Competition at Westerville North High School.

* Oct. 12: Mid-States Band Association Competition at Colerain High School.

* Oct. 26: OMEA Competition at Thomas Worthington High School.

* Nov. 2: OMEA State Finals (tentative pending qualification).

* Nov. 9: MSBA Class Finals at Miamisburg High School.

The field commander of North's band is Eric Glasgow.

In addition to Loney, other staff members include Zane Aleman and Alex Chapman, assistant directors; Jon Honeycutt, percussion director; Andy Ranck, color guard director; Carlee Macafee and Ben Guegold, winds staff; Julio Abreu and Josh Boulis, percussion staff; Sierra Bennett and Coriell Hughes, color guard staff.

Westerville South

Westerville South Marching Band director John Laswell said the theme of this season is "retro."

The 100-member band, including the color guard, is comprised of 19 seniors, 15 juniors, 33 sophomores, 25 freshmen and eight eighth-graders.

"The Westerville South Marching Band has a long running tradition of excellence in the performing arts, whether it be on football Friday nights, or on the contest field," Laswell said. "The marching band is an extension of our concert, jazz and chamber ensembles."

He encourages spectators to support the band at home games and at competitions.

South's field commanders are Cassie Cotter and Liz Merkey.

* Sept. 7: Honor Flight Performance (Columbus Airport).

* Sept. 21: Cambridge High School OMEA.

* Sept. 27: South homecoming game.

* Oct. 5: Westerville Invitational.

* Oct. 19: Athens High School and Warren Local High School OMEA.

* Oct. 26: Newark High School and Tri-Valley OMEA.

* Nov. 2: OMEA State Marching Band Finals.
