A former Whitehall drama coach was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison for having a sexual relationship last year with a 17-year-old student.
Patrick B. McGregor II, 29, who pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to sexual battery and tampering with evidence, was sentenced Sept. 27 by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Kim Brown, following a lengthy and emotional statement from the victim.
The tampering with evidence charge relates to McGregor's attempt to delete evidence from his phone. He could have faced up to eight years on the charges.
Westerville police arrested McGregor on Nov. 14, 2018.
Under Ohio law, teachers can't have sexual relationships with students, regardless of the student's age or consent.
In addition to prison, McGregor, who taught at Whitehall-Yearling High School until he was fired in September 2018, is required to register for life as a Tier 3 sexual offender. He also faces five years of post-release control.
