Jeffrey Mansion Preschool plans to increase tuition by 4% for the 2020-21 school year and is prepared for minimal disruption to the program as the expansion of Jeffrey Mansion, 165 N. Parkview Ave., gets underway next year, according to Bexley Recreation Department administrators.

The city's recreation board voted unanimously Nov. 13 to approve a 4% tuition increase for next year. The increase will be from $250 to $260 for three-day, half-day enrollment; $550 to $572 for three-day, full-day enrollment; $350 to $364 for five-day, half-day enrollment; and $685 to $712.40 for five-day, full-day enrollment.

The Jeffrey Mansion Preschool has five lead teachers, three assistant teachers and 59 students, which is the maximum enrollment, said Cate Swendal, preschool administrator.

With the 4% tuition increase, "we still are below the other preschools in our community. It still keeps us competitive, but we are on the lower end of tuition per month," she said. "And this would allow us to continue to provide a pay increase for our teachers."

The recreation department has a plan in place to ensure the preschool experiences as little disruption as possible when construction at Jeffrey Mansion begins next year, said Michael Price, Bexley's recreation director.

One aspect of the expansion plan is to install an elevator in the mansion in summer 2020, when the preschool is closed. The preschool's school year runs from the day after Labor Day to the Friday before Memorial Day.

"The architects seem confident that (the elevator installation) can happen over the summer months, and we're developing some contingency plans if it doesn't," Price said.

The contingency plan includes using a temporary classroom if construction ends up disrupting the preschool and other recreation programming, Price said.

The temporary classroom "won't just be used for preschool, but it would be a primary use if there's a need for it," he said. "We're not intending a need for it, but it's one of the backup plans for programming for yoga or other things."

Price said the Jeffrey Mansion Preschool will continue to have a maximum enrollment of 59 students once the expansion is complete.
