Hilliard City Council President Kelly McGivern and Santa Claus will throw the switch to light a 25-foot Christmas tree at Hilliard’s 30th annual tree-lighting celebration from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Hilliard’s Station Park at Center and Main streets.

Reindeer, ice sculptors and carriage rides are among the activities scheduled for the celebration, said Ed Merritt, director of the Hilliard Recreation and Parks Department.

Residents are also invited to help local children stay warm through the city’s first “Cram the Cruiser." Held in conjunction with the three-lighting ceremony, the Hilliard Division of Police is collecting new winter coats, gloves, scarves and sweatpants.

Donations also may be made in advance at the Joint Safety Services Building, 5181 Northwest Parkway, and the Hilliard Municipal Building, 3800 Municipal Way.

All collected items will be donated directly to Hilliard City Schools.

“We are excited to kick off the giving season with this new event,” police Chief Robert Fisher said.
