Whitehall police arrested a 48-year-old Columbus woman for robbery, a second-degree felony, and assaulting a police officer, a fourth-degree felony, at 7:50 p.m. Jan. 6 at Kroger, 850 S. Hamilton Road.

Police responded to the store to assist an auxiliary officer who had detained the woman for shoplifting, reports said. The woman reportedly left the store with a cart containing alcohol and groceries and, when asked, refused to show a receipt for the unbagged items. The auxiliary officer reported he attempted to stop the woman as she exited the store, but the woman swung a purse at him, striking him on the side of his head.

The officer fell down but then pursued the woman, whom he had apprehended and handcuffed by the time other officers responded, according to reports. The woman reportedly stopped running after the officer warned that he would use a stun gun.

The officer sustained a concussion in the incident, police said.

The woman admitted to stealing the merchandise but said she did not know the auxiliary officer was a police officer, even though he was wearing a standard uniform, reports said.

The woman "has a long criminal history," according to police. She was transported to the Franklin County jail.
