Former Fairfield County Commissioner Gregory "Mike" Kiger was a popular figure locally — known for how accessible he was to the community.

Kiger, who died March 26, held weekly informal meetings at local restaurants during which anyone could come and meet with him. He served as a commissioner for 16 years after being elected in 2002. He did not run in 2018 after being stricken with pneumonia.

His cause of death was not immediately available. He was 69.
