Helen Winnemore's begins another chapter under the store's newest owners.
Sister and brother Julie and John Jenkins have purchased the store specializing in handmade gifts and clothing at 150 E. Kossuth St. in German Village.
"The concept of bringing handcrafted works to the public has always been a passion of mine," Julie Jenkins said.
She said she has closed her Fresh Crafts Gallery, 2068 Arlington Ave. in Upper Arlington, so she could focus on the German Village location, which shares many of the same artists as her previous store.
Julie Jenkins, who lives in Marble Cliff, will run the day-to-day operations, and John Jenkins, who lives in Seattle, will refine the store's digital operation by putting the inventory online, improving remote purchasing and enhancing brand identity.
"We don't have a plan to drastically change the way we're doing things," he said.
Because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Helen Winnemore's is accepting customers by appointment only until the state begins lifting restrictions, Julie Jenkins said.
Julie Jenkins, 62, spent much of her career as a financial attorney and John Jenkins, 60, started his own graphic-design and photography business. They lived in Upper Arlington when they were younger.
Julie Jenkins said she spent her spare time collecting crafts while living in New England, where she spent much of her professional life. She returned to central Ohio in 2012 and has retired from her law practice.
She operated Fresh Crafts Gallery for 6 1/2 years before closing it June 11 and purchasing Helen Winnemore's the following day.
Helen Winnemore was a legend of sorts in crafting circles, starting out in her Grandview Heights residence.
She moved her business a couple of times before settling in German Village in 1966.
Sarah Kellenberger Harpham, who had owned the shop since 1997, announced its sale in January.
Julie Jenkins said she knew she couldn't pass up the opportunity.
"It's really the history and the location in German Village and, really, the stories about Helen," she said.
