Columbus Academy swimming and diving coach Craig Yakscoe was looking forward to his annual trip to the Division II state meet at Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Academy earned numerous state berths with a strong showing in the district meet Feb. 17 at Ohio State. The boys won their second consecutive district title, finishing first (353 points) ahead of runner-up Dover (278) as 39 teams scored, and the girls finished second (253) behind Columbus School for Girls (343) as 33 teams scored.
"This is big-time momentum for (the state meet)," Yakscoe said. "I'm very happy with where they are and this should really carry us through, and we're going to go up there and put on a good show."
For the boys, sophomore Jacob Eismann won the 100-yard backstroke in a meet-record 51.43 seconds and finished second in the 50 freestyle (21.34). Junior Max Dreisbach won the 200 individual medley (1:55.18) and was second in the 100 butterfly (51.69), and senior Nate Goldfarb won the 100 breaststroke (56.95) and was third in the 200 IM (1:56.77).
Goldfarb is seeded first at state in the 100 breast.
Dreisbach, Goldfarb, senior Dylan Warren and freshman Mike DeAscentis won the 400 free relay (3:15.21), and Dreisbach, Eismann, Goldfarb and sophomore Jack Campbell won the 200 medley relay (1:35.59).
DeAscentis was second in the 200 free (1:46.86) and 500 free (4:48.99), and Campbell was third in the 100 fly (54.38).
Also earning a state berth was Campbell, Eismann, senior Tin Le and junior Eric DeVore in the 200 free relay (third, 1:29.69).
For the girls, divers Esther Lawrence, a junior, and Jordan Skilken, a sophomore, finished first (579.95) and second (553.3), respectively, and were seeded first and second at state. Last season at state, Skilken was second (459.75) and Lawrence was fourth (450.65).
Also at district, senior Audrey Grammel was second in the 100 breast (1:04.43) and is seeded second at state. She was fifth in the 200 IM (2:10.27).
Grammel, junior Jane Li, sophomore Samantha Kass and freshman Whitney Hannallah won the 200 medley relay (1:48.63), and Grammel, Kass, Li and junior Carly Shocket were second in the 400 free relay (3:38.99).
Hannallah was third (1:07.33) and freshman Abby Yakam was fourth (1:07.7) in the 100 breast, Kass was fifth in the 50 free (24.84) and Li was eighth in the 100 fly (59.56) to also earn state berths.
Jeffers to bowl
in district tourney
Junior bowler Abby Jeffers qualified for the Division II girls district tournament Thursday, Feb. 23, at HP Lanes after finishing 46th of 166 bowlers in the sectional Feb. 17 at HP Lanes with a 412 series.
The top 14 teams and top 14 individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to district, where the top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advance to state March 3 at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.
The girls finished 24th (2,034) of 27 teams at sectional behind champion Jonathan Alder (3,522).
The boys team did not qualify a bowler for district. It finished 26th (2,885) of 30 teams at sectional Feb. 18 at HP Lanes behind champion Jonathan Alder (4,110).
Michael Reagan led the Vikings with a 484 series.
Boys basketball team
preps for tournament
Seeded second for the Division III district tournament, the boys basketball team plays host to 16th-seeded Marion Elgin on Monday, Feb. 27, in a first-round game.
The winner plays 13th-seeded West Jefferson on Wednesday, March 1, at the home of the better seed. The Vikings won both MSL-Ohio Division games against the Roughriders, 56-47 on Dec. 6 and 51-47 on Jan. 27.
The second-round winner plays fifth-seeded Marion Pleasant or 10th-seeded Mount Gilead on March 4, with the winner advancing to a district semifinal March 7.
Academy is 15-7 overall and went 7-5 in the MSL-Ohio to tie Whitehall for fourth behind champion Worthington Christian (10-2).
Wrestling team to
compete at sectional
The wrestling team will compete in a 12-team Division III sectional Saturday, Feb. 25, at Madison Plains.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the district tournament March 3 and 4 at Troy. From there, the top four in each weight class move on to state March 9-11 at Ohio State.
Girls basketball team
The 23rd-seeded girls basketball team was 1-18 before playing top-seeded Africentric in the first round of the Division III district tournament Feb. 21.
The winner plays 24th-seeded Madison Plains in the second round Thursday, Feb. 23, with the winner playing 10th-seeded Elgin, 12th-seeded Newark Catholic or 15th-seeded Centerburg in a semifinal Tuesday, Feb. 28.
The district final is March 3.
