Led by junior 145-pounder Jake Marsh, the Marysville High School wrestling team will be well represented in the Division I state tournament Thursday, March 9, through Saturday, March 11, at Ohio State.
Marsh, a three-time state qualifier, will face Fairfield’s Sam Meddings (35-9) in the first round. Marsh is 41-5 on the season.
Last season at state, Marsh placed sixth at 138. He was 1-2 at 126 as a freshman.
Marsh finished second in the district tournament March 3 and 4 at Hilliard Darby, losing to Dublin Coffman’s Dom Demas 5-3 in the final.
Senior Derek Sharp won the district title at 126, defeating Delaware’s Zach Williams 11-5 in the final to improve to 41-7. Sharp will face Medina’s Ryan Wissel (34-12) in the first round at state.
Sophomore Walker Heard won the district title at 138, defeating Darby’s Tai Bloch 15-8 in the final to improve to 41-5. He will face Louisville’s Jax Leonard (47-10) in the first round at state.
Junior Tyler Bates placed third at district and will face Elyria’s Tristian Brady (52-3) in the first round at state. Bates is 44-9 on the season.
Sophomore Tyler Connolly finished third at district and will face Massillon Perry’s Matt Carrick (27-6) in the first round at state. Connolly is 40-11.
Marysville finished third (121 points) at district behind Olentangy Liberty (236.5) and Darby (124.5) as 42 teams scored.
Boys basketball team
loses in opening round
The boys basketball team lost at ninth-seeded Pickerington North 69-60 in the first round of the Division I district tournament Feb. 25 to finish 7-16 overall.
Thomas Rush led the 34th-seeded Monarchs with 14 points, followed by Josh Daman with 13, Bodie Eberhart with 12 and Marshall Francisco with 10.
Eberhart was named first-team all-OCC-Central Division. Daman was second-team all-league and Francisco was honorable mention all-league.
Marysville went 3-7 in the OCC-Central to tie Central Crossing for fourth behind Upper Arlington (9-1), Coffman (7-3) and Hilliard Davidson (7-3) and ahead of Westland (1-9).

The boys bowling team completed its season by competing in the 20-team Division I district tournament March 3 at Sawmill Lanes.
The Monarchs finished 19th (3,681) behind champion Westerville Central (4,176) as the top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to state Saturday, March 11, at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Michael Helton Jr. led Marysville with a 604 three-game series to place 25th overall.
Kaleb Chaffin was next with a 536, followed by Kayla Helton (518), Ryan Skaggs (356, two games), Colt Biehl (348, two games), Nathan Craig (159, one game) and Aaron Sullivan (122, one game).
