During the third quarter of its Division III regional semifinal March 8, the Africentric Early College girls basketball team settled in once and for all.

The Nubians built a 14-point lead by halftime and pulled away in the second half for an 85-46 win over Mount Blanchard Riverdale at Lexington to improve to 24-3 and advance to a regional final.

The defending state champion, Africentric will face Archbold at 1:30 p.m. March 11 at Lexington, with the winner advancing to a state semifinal March 17 at Ohio State.

Riverdale finished 14-13.

“We were up by eight in the first quarter and literally had to hold the ball,” Nubians coach Will McKinney said. “We went on a 30-6 run in the third quarter.”

Jordan Horston had 18 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Nubians, who were ranked fourth in the final state poll.

Archbold, which is ranked second in the state, improved to 26-1 with a 37-35 overtime win over Findlay Liberty-Benton in a regional semifinal March 7.

“(Archbold has) some good shooters and they play hard,” McKinney said. “When I saw them against Liberty-Benton, they were pressing. I don’t know if they’ll do that against us, but they’re good.”
