The St. Charles Preparatory School tennis team had earned its sixth consecutive CCL championship, but coach Max Quinton already was looking ahead.

The Cardinals defeated Watterson 5-0 on April 25 in their league finale at Columbus School for Girls. It marked the second consecutive season that they went 4-0 in the CCL and swept all five courts against their four opponents.

Watterson finished second (3-1), followed by DeSales (1-2), Hartley (1-3) and Ready (0-3). DeSales played Ready on May 2 to wrap up the league schedule.

"We're in good shape now," said Quinton, whose team was 6-4 overall before playing Lancaster on May 1 in an OTCA tournament match. "I think we're ready for sectional, which is just around the corner."

The Cardinals play in a Division I sectional tournament May 11 and 13 at Hilliard Davidson. The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to district May 18 at Davidson and May 20 at Upper Arlington.

Last season, Jack Dabek and Evan Yakubov advanced to the state tournament in doubles and lost to eventual runners-up Noah Stern and Alex Taylor of Cincinnati Sycamore 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round.

Dabek and Yakubov will be one of the Cardinals' two postseason doubles teams, and Milan Gonela and Matt Morrison will play singles. Quyen Thai will play doubles with Windsor Niermeyer or Vinh Thai, with the other playing singles.

"We still have some choices to make there," Quinton said. "I feel pretty good about where we are right now."

Against Watterson, Gonela, Morrison and Niermeyer won in singles. Dabek and Quyen Thai won at first doubles, and Patrick O'Neil and Vinh Thai won at second doubles.
