The Lakewood High School softball team will get its shot at a second consecutive Division II state championship when it plays Akron Hoban at 7 p.m. June 3 at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

The Lancers defeated Jonathan Alder 14-6 in a state semifinal June 2 at Firestone Stadium to improve to 31-1 and advance to the final.

The Pioneers, who finished 22-5, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but couldn’t hold Lakewood in check.

In the top of the third, two errors and a wild pitch by Jonathan Alder contributed to a seven-run inning for the Lancers. Courtney Vierstra had a two-run single and Megan Hitchcock and Tigan Braskie had RBI singles in the inning.

The Pioneers scored two runs on an error in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to 7-3, but Lakewood answered with five more runs in the fourth.

In that inning, the Lancers got a three-run double from Braskie, an RBI double from Brayanna Wilson and an RBI single from Hitchcock.

Lakewood’s Brenna Brownfield doubled and scored on a double by Courtney Knepper in the fifth.

In the sixth, Emily Wallace walked, moved to second on a grounder, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to complete the Lancers’ scoring.

Vierstra picked up the victory, giving up four earned runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out seven.

She was the losing pitcher in the Lancers’ 2-1 loss to Granville in the 2015 state final, but was the winning pitcher in their 7-4 victory over LaGrange Keystone in last year’s state title game.
