Boosted by the return of several key players, the Dublin Scioto High School football team earned its first win of the season, defeating visiting Big Walnut 51-21 on Sept. 7.

The Irish improved to 1-2, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 0-3.

“We have guys who can make plays in space, and as long as everybody works together and sticks together, I think our best football is still in front us,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “There’s some things that we have to get better at. The defense had two scores, which blew it open in the first half.”

Among the players who returned to Scioto’s lineup was running back Kenyon Pannell, who missed the first two games with an ankle injury. Pannell rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries.

Quarterback Kyron Rogers, who missed the first two games with a broken hand, completed 11 of 15 passes for 141 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown to Jaden Penn in the fourth quarter that closed the scoring.

“It was a good team effort,” Rogers said. “We have more weapons than the past weeks. I felt comfortable tonight.”

Sam Andoh, who sat out Scioto’s 38-0 loss to Dublin Coffman on Sept. 1 because of disciplinary reasons, returned to the lineup and scored on an 18-yard fumble return that gave the Irish a 27-7 lead with 10 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Demaine Barnett’s 48-yard interception return for a touchdown gave Scioto a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Big Walnut running back Abe Myers rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. His 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter cut the Golden Eagles’ deficit to 14-7, and his 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter pulled the Golden Eagles to within 30-14 heading into halftime.

Penn, who started the first two games at quarterback, took a pitch from Rogers and tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Jones in the third quarter to give the Irish a 37-14 lead.

Big Walnut’s Nathan Lawyer scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter to make it 37-21, but the Irish answered quickly, as Pannell scored on a 68-yard run on the next play from scrimmage.
