The Hartley High School football team got its offense in sync early and proved impossible to stop during a 42-10 victory over Ready on Oct. 6 at DeSales.

It marks the eighth consecutive victory in the series for the Hawks. In previous years, the matchup represented a league game.

Hartley, which improved to 6-1, is now competing in the same CCL division as DeSales, St. Charles and Watterson. The Silver Knights, who fell to 5-2, are playing a schedule that includes all six teams from the MSL-Ohio Division.

“We’ve got a stable of (running) backs this year,” coach Brad Burchfield said. “I don’t know if we have one guy that you can key on, but a lot of our guys could be a featured back.”

Hartley took a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Nick Cone with 6 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first quarter and made it 13-0 with 13 seconds left in the quarter on a 22-yard run by Anthony Blackmon.

Ready had the ball for just five plays in the opening quarter but made it 13-7 with 8:08 to go in the first half when quarterback Austin Aiello hooked up with Jaishan Norris for an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Blackmon added a 2-yard touchdown run and Anthony Carfagna ran for the two-point conversion with 4:19 left in the second quarter to make it 21-7.

Ready kicker A.J. Craddock made a 32-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter as Hartley took a 21-10 lead into halftime.

Then on the Hawks’ first possession of the third quarter, quarterback Anthony Carfagna hit Phillip Cole for a 36-yard pass that set up a 30-yard touchdown run by Elijah Carter on the next play that made it 28-10.

Carter added an interception on Ready’s ensuing drive to set up a 54-yard touchdown run by Ben Dankow with 3:35 left in the third quarter and Blackmon added another 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

“We scored on every drive tonight,” Carfagna said. “I thought that was a big key. One of our main focuses in practice this week was score on that first drive and get the momentum going, and we marched right down the field. It was awesome.”

Carter finished with 122 yards rushing on 16 carries and Blackmon had 70 yards rushing and three scores to lead the Hartley offense.

Jack Foley rushed for 120 yards to lead Ready.

“We played them tough for the first half,” Knights coach Brian Cross said. “I thought they kind of wore us down. They had a size advantage on us and we have a lot more guys going both ways. We moved the ball against them pretty well on the ground.”
