The Olentangy Liberty High School football team spotted visiting Westerville South an early 14-6 lead before storming back for a 34-14 win on Oct. 6.

The Patriots improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the OCC-Buckeye Division, while South fell to 3-4 and 0-2.

“We lost four of five starters on the offensive line last year and our guys have battled and fought,” Liberty coach Steve Hale said. “We have changed that lineup so many times. We’ve asked kids to do things and move around just trying to find the right combination. They’re getting better and figuring it out, and every week they get a little bit better. I’m real excited about the way we exerted our run game.”

The Wildcats built a 14-6 lead on Michael Mansaray’s 30-yard touchdown run and Malik Powell’s 80-yard kickoff return for a score.

Quarterback Mitchell Okuley spearheaded Liberty’s comeback with a pair of first-half touchdown passes, followed by Mitchell Kershner’s 29-yard field goal that gave Liberty the lead for good at 15-14.

Matthew Webb closed the first-half scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run with 4 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Liberty extended its lead to 28-14 midway through the third quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run by Webb.

Okuley rushed for 141 yards on 13 carries and completed 10 of 17 passes for 104 yards and two scores, while Webb ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

South running back and Ohio State commit Jaelen Gill aggravated a hamstring injury early in the third quarter and didn’t return.

Mansaray led the Wildcats’ running game with 40 yards and a touchdown.

“OCC-Buckeye is good football and you have to be able to put four quarters together as a group, and it starts with me,” South coach Matthew Christ said. “When things don’t go right for a series, we have to be able to battle through those moments and not act like the world is coming to an end.”
