The Dublin Jerome High School boys golf team received a balanced effort in winning the 12-team Division I district tournament Oct. 10 at Apple Valley.
Jackson Chandler and Davis Root both shot 72 to lead the Celtics (294), who secured a berth to the state tournament Oct. 20 and 21 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. Ethan Snyder shot 73, Blake Solomon shot 77 and Mason Wagner had an 81.
Runner-up Olentangy Liberty (307) also advanced to state.
Jerome will be seeking its seventh state title.
“We’ve been playing well lately. We shot 280 at sectional and we’re trying to keep that momentum going,” Celtics coach Taylor Harle said. “You always feel pressure when you have to play well to make it on to the next round and I try to tell them to just stay calm (because) they’ve done it a million times before. I told them if we just play our game and stay solid then we have a good chance.”
Liberty’s Trey Rath earned medalist honors, winning a one-hole tiebreaker with Central Crossing’s Caleb Davern after each shot 71.
Jacob Hickman (75), Grant Smeltzer (80) and Cole Corder (81) rounded out Liberty’s scoring.
“It’s a grind and the guys know it going into the season,” Liberty coach Ryan Snivley said of only two district teams qualifying for state. “You can tell the nerves just everywhere on the course today.”
Davern and Thomas Worthington’s David LaLonde earned the two individual state-qualifying berths. LaLonde and Westerville South’s Troy Taylor both shot 73 to tie for the second spot, requiring a playoff that LaLonde won after three holes.
Davern, a junior, will compete in his second state tournament and LaLonde, a senior, will play in his first.
Taylor, a senior, was looking for his third state appearance.
