Few bowling programs in central Ohio have shown the consistency of the Ready High School boys team in recent years.
The Silver Knights are coming off a third consecutive appearance in the Division II state tournament, where they finished 14th (3,068) in the 16-team qualifying round last March at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.
Coming close to that finish this season will be a tough task for Ready, which lost seven of its to eight bowlers to graduation.
"We're very young on both the boys and girls teams," 17th-year coach Russ Rehner said. "Going forward, I just want to see improvement during the course of the season. Wins and losses are not our goal. Our goal is to get from point A to point B to point C. The goal is for them to improve their skills in the sport."
The only returnee for the boys team is sophomore Baily Garren, who didn't compete at state but is one of the Knights' top scorers this season.
Ready opened with a 1,381-1,011 win over Columbus West on Nov. 29, lost its CCL opener to Watterson 1,767-1,533 on Dec. 5 and beat Africentric 1,517-1,125 on Dec. 6.
Garren averaged 158.5 to lead the way against West and averaged 144 against Watterson to finish behind sophomore Finn Hardenbergh, who saw limited action last season.
Sophomore Aaron King and freshmen Wesley Hendricks and Aaron King are the other boys competitors.
The girls team beat West 1,471-1,149, lost to Watterson 1,623-1,528 and beat Africentric 1,377-1,076.
The top returnees are sophomore Mary Zerrien and junior Brooke Smith, who finished 21st (466) and 58th (389), respectively, at sectional last year to advance to the district tournament. Zerrien then was ninth (524) and Smith was 66th (326) at district.
Junior Javanna Joyce and sophomore Samantha Blackburn also are key returnees.
The other girls competitors are sophomores Megan Hackman and Maryann Rucker and freshman Cheyenne Blackburn.
Wrestling team returns four district qualifiers
Of the wrestling team's seven Division III district qualifiers a year ago, four have returned in juniors Andrew Halko (145 pounds) and Sam Hardenbergh (220) and sophomores Cameron Jones (120) and Jacob Robinson (170).
Halko won one match at district and finished 33-8 overall, and Hardenbergh won 12 matches a year ago.
New to the team are juniors Carl Copley (heavyweight) and Gavin King (195), sophomores Billy Fannin Jr. (195/220) and Garren (195) and freshmen Aiden Aiello (113) and Masabo Ndikunana (132).
Aiello is the son of coach Anthony Aiello, who is in his second season.
Garren, who is splitting time between bowling and wrestling, is the brother of 2014 graduate Patrik Garren, who won the state heavyweight title in 2013 and was third in both 2012 and 2014. He now competes for the University of Pennsylvania.
Ready opened Dec. 2 by placing ninth (78) behind champion Grove City (310) in the 12-team Tony Pizzuro Memorial Tournament at DeSales.
"We have a lot of new guys," coach Aiello said. "We have a traffic jam up top, but a couple of them probably won't wrestle in a tournament for a couple weeks. Once they all get to their legally certified weights, everyone will be in the lineup. I lost a lot of good seniors."
Also at district last season, 2017 graduate Patrick Jansen (195) placed sixth and finished 33-8, and 2017 graduate Matt Stover (182) won one match to finish 31-12. Classmate Daniel Halko (152) also competed.
Knights have three swimmers competing
Both of Ready's swimmers from last season have returned, and there has been an addition to the program.
Senior Josh Conturo is competing for the boys team and sisters Katie Smith, a sophomore, and Elaine Smith, a freshman, represent the girls team.
Conturo specializes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free, Katie Smith competes in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and Elaine Smith is in the 200 free and 500 free.
"I anticipate Katie and Elaine to make district in their respective events," said Ann Smith, who is their mother and serves as parent representative for the athletes in the program.
Last season, Katie Smith won the 100 breast (1 minute, 14.95 seconds) and was sixth in the 200 IM (2:33.71) in a Division II sectional at Upper Arlington and then finished 16th in the 100 breast (1:13.01) at district.
Conturo was 12th in the 50 free (27.72) and 16th in the 100 free (1:05.89) at sectional.
