Two seasons after not having enough competitors to field a team, the Ready High School girls bowling program earned a league championship.

With a 1,590-1,499 victory over Watterson on Feb. 8 at Sawmill Lanes, the Silver Knights avenged their only league loss to share the CCL title with the Eagles at 5-1.

Ready then beat Olentangy Liberty 1,689-1,454 on Feb. 13 in its regular-season finale to finish 12-3 overall.

"We were so excited," sophomore Mary Zerrien said. "We wanted (the league title) so bad and we got it."

Ready, which lost to Watterson 1,623-1,528 on Dec. 5, competed in the Division II sectional Feb. 17 at HP Lanes. The top 12 teams and top 12 individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the district tournament Thursday, Feb. 22, at HP Lanes.

At district, the top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the state tournament March 3 at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.

In the win over Watterson, Zerrien (171.5 average), Cheyenne Blackburn (134.5) and Megan Hackman (125.5) led the way.

"We always support each other," Zerrien said. "We (were hoping to) go to districts as a team."

The boys team lost to St. Charles 2,296-1,682 on Feb. 9 to finish 0-8 in the CCL. The Knights then lost to Liberty 2,076-1,436 to finish 4-14 overall.

Against St. Charles, Wesley Hendricks led in average at 184.0.

On Feb. 16, the boys competed in the Division II sectional at HP Lanes. The top 12 teams and top 12 individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the district tournament Thursday, Feb. 22, at HP Lanes.

All 3 Ready swimmers advance to district

Ready's three swimmers competed in the Division II district meet Feb. 16 at Ohio University.

The top two finishers in each event automatically advanced to the state meet Thursday, Feb. 22, and Friday, Feb. 23, at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths were awarded for each event based on district times statewide.

On Feb. 10 in a sectional at Columbus Academy, Elaine Smith was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle (5 minutes, 35.3 seconds) and seventh in the 200 free (2:05.61), and Katie Smith was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.18) and 13th in the 200 individual medley (2:33.92) as both moved on in each of their events. At district, Elaine Smith was seeded eighth in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free, and Katie Smith was seeded 21st in the 100 breast and 24th in the 200 IM.

For the boys, Josh Conturo qualified for district in the 200 free. He placed 12th (2:06.69) at sectional and was seeded 25th at district. He also was 17th in the 100 free (59.47) but did not advance.

Conturo's time in the 200 free was more than six seconds faster than his time in the CCL meet Jan. 27.

The girls scored 21 points at sectional to place 11th of 18 teams behind champion Hartley (227.66). Conturo recorded 1 point to place Ready 18th behind champion Academy (326).

Boys squad battles for outright title

With a 58-51 victory over DeSales on Feb. 9, the boys basketball team captured at least a share of its first CCL championship since 2001-02.

The Knights tried to win the title outright Feb. 16 when they played host to Watterson.

Ready, which lost to Hannibal River 75-54 on Feb. 10 at Marietta College to fall to 16-3 overall, was 6-1 in the league before facing Watterson. Hartley finished 6-2 in the league, and Watterson was 5-2 before Feb. 16.

Against DeSales, Chanc Dawson had 25 points and Brady Thomas added 12 to lead the way. Ready scored 23 second-quarter points and led 34-20 by halftime.

River improved to 18-1 by beating the Knights despite Thomas scoring 22 points and Dawson scoring 21. The Pilots' Lukas Isaly scored 40.

Ready closes the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 20, at home against Gahanna Christian before opening the Division III district tournament Feb. 27 at home against 20th-seeded Liberty Union. The Knights are the third seed.

Girls team preps for tourney opener

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, the ninth-seeded girls basketball team opens the Division III district tournament at home against 11th-seeded Grandview.

The winner plays Saturday, Feb. 24, at home against 13th-seeded West Jefferson in a second-round game.

If Ready wins its first two tournament games, it would face eighth-seeded Centerburg, 10th-seeded Marion Elgin or 12th-seeded Worthington Christian in a district semifinal Feb. 27.

The Knights lost to Watterson 50-36 on Feb. 8 to finish fourth (2-5) in the CCL behind Hartley (6-1), Watterson (5-2) and DeSales (3-4) and ahead of Columbus School for Girls (0-4).

Ready improved to 11-9 overall by beating Bexley 54-38 on Feb. 13. The Knights closed the regular season Feb. 16 at Newark Catholic.

Against Watterson, Ready trailed 31-25 at halftime and was held to 11 points in the second half. Dani Hall scored 12 points and Bre Hejduk added 11.

Then against Bexley, Hall had 19 points and Derricka Bramwell added 12.

Wrestlers set to begin postseason

The wrestling team opens the postseason Saturday, Feb. 24, in a Division III sectional at Madison Plains.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the district tournament March 2 and 3 at Heath.

On Feb. 15, the Knights competed in the CCL tournament at Hartley.
