After moving to central Ohio from New Jersey prior to his sophomore year, Tyler Endecott hoped to someday compete in the Division I state meet.

The Hilliard Davidson High School senior will get that chance after placing fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 55.26 seconds in the district meet Feb. 17 at Ohio University.

Endecott is seeded 17th of 24 swimmers in the event for the state meet Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, at Branin Natatorium in Canton.

At district, the top two placers in each swimming event automatically advance to state. In addition, 16 at-large state berths were awarded for each swimming event based on times statewide.

"Tyler is ready," coach Lynn Bowers said. "He's been looking forward to his since he moved here from New Jersey. He's primed and ready."

Endecott placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (58.52) at district, but failed to earn an at-large state berth.

Last season, he finished 11th in both the 200 freestyle (1:47.71) and 500 free (4:51.42) at district.

As a sophomore, Endecott finished eighth in the 500 free (4:55.4) and 19th in the 200 free (1:48.74) at district.

Endecott and Bowers said a change in strategy, including competing in the 200 IM instead of the 500 free, helped him reach state.

"I was swimming different events last year," Endecott said. "I switched up my events and it seemed to work... I think I have a little bit more to do. I think I can go a little faster, but I'm excited."

Endecott is the first state qualifier under Bowers, who is in her second year at Davidson after serving as an assistant under Brian Dickmann for five seasons when he guided the Bradley, Darby and Davidson boys and girls programs simultaneously.

"I'm really excited," Bowers said of having a state qualifier. "It's an honor to be (at state). I also have to thank the club coaches. Tyler swims for the Ohio State swim club and he trains with them."

Also at district, Endecott, C.W. Hess, Phillip Tate and Dalton Brown placed eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:39.01) and Endecott, Brown, Hess and Brady Vann were eighth in the 400 free relay (3:17.34).

Davidson scored 80.5 points at district to finish 12th behind champion Dublin Jerome (303) as 29 teams scored.

Brogan Gehring led the girls team at district, placing seventh in the 100 breast (1:09.49) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:12.52). She also joined Alex Worthington, Paige Erdman and Riley Ernst on the 15th-place 400 free relay (3:48.83).

The Wildcats tied Dublin Scioto and Worthington Kilbourne for 17th (40) behind champion Upper Arlington (274) as 30 teams scored.

Girls basketball team rallies to edge Irish

The girls basketball team rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat host and 21st-seeded Scioto 54-52 in the first round of the Division I district tournament Feb. 17.

The 25th-seeded Wildcats trailed 26-18 at halftime and 43-32 after the third quarter, but went on a 15-0 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and pulled out the win.

"This team never gives up," coach Joy Taylor said. "What a comeback. They worked their butts off in the second half. They just dug deep and they wanted it enough. We talked about it at halftime. We just have to want it more than them and they played like it."

Taylor added that increased intensity on defense in the second half helped fuel the comeback.

Emily Simon had 15 points, Allie Klein scored 12 and Brianna O'Connor added 10 to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 12-11.

Davidson will play host to 33rd-seeded Watkins Memorial in the second round Friday, Feb. 23, with the winner playing third-seeded Pickerington Central or 48th-seeded Hamilton Township in a district semifinal Wednesday, Feb. 28, at a neutral site to be determined.

The district final is March 3 at Ohio Dominican University.

Boys basketball team prepping for Patriots

The boys basketball team is hoping its second matchup with Olentangy Liberty this season goes better than its first.

The 20th-seeded Wildcats open the Division I district tournament Saturday, Feb. 24, at 14th-seeded Liberty. Davidson, which was 12-9 overall before playing Watterson in its regular-season finale Feb. 20, lost to the host Patriots 62-51 on Jan. 23.

The winner plays host to 23rd-seeded Northland in the second round March 2.

Davidson defeated Marysville 41-38 on Feb. 16 to finish 6-4 in the OCC-Central Division.

Jacob Drees had 13 points and Gage Keys scored 10.

Wrestling team to begin postseason

The wrestling team will open the postseason Saturday, Feb. 24, by competing in a 10-team sectional at Marysville.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the district tournament March 2 and 3 at Darby.

"I like where we're at," coach Dominic DiSabato said. "Marysville is obviously tough. They're a tough tournament team as well as a dual team. We're going to go out there and try to get 13 guys to district. That's how we're looking at it."

Davidson closed the regular season with a 38-29 loss to visiting Dublin Coffman on Feb. 15 to finish third in the OCC-Central at 3-2, behind Coffman (5-0) and Marysville (4-1).

Winning by pin against the Shamrocks were Gio DiSabato at 126 pounds (2:51) and Demetri Monroe at 145 (2:31).

"I was happy with our guys," coach DiSabato said. "I thought everybody wrestled their butt off, and that's how you want to be, wrestling this hard. Everybody is at their peak right now at the end of the year, and that's what we want."
