Westerville Central High School’s Gianna Brooks and Hilliard Darby’s Chloe Shook were among the central Ohio gymnasts who put together strong performances in the individual state meet March 3 at Hilliard Bradley.
Brooks was one of three gymnasts from the area to compete in the all-around, finishing 24th with a 35.025. Her best score was a 9.025 on vault, in which she tied for 27th, and she posted an 8.8 on floor exercise as part of the all-around.
There were 36 competitors in each event and the all-around.
“I’m super excited to (be) back (at) state,” Brooks said. “It’s so much fun. In years past, I’ve always done really well on vault. This year, I had a left hip flexor injury while I was vaulting. I’m honestly excited just to (be) back.”
Shook had the highest finish among the area competitors, placing 13th on floor with a 9.2.
“Sometimes it’s hard to hit everything, but I think it all came together,” Shook said. “I didn’t do well at district, so I’m just happy to be here. It’s an honor.”
Also competing in the all-around were Dublin Coffman’s Bethany Hurt, who finished 34th (33.65), and Bradley’s Greta Planck, who placed 36th (32.875).
Hurt, a four-time state qualifier and this year’s district champion in the all-around, posted her best score on vault, tying for 19th with a 9.125.
Planck also had her best score on vault, recording an 8.975 as part of the all-around.

“I’m excited for all four of our girls (who made it to state individually),” Olentangy coach Misty Lloyd-Matthews said.
