The Grove City Christian School baseball team opened the Division IV district tournament with more on its plate than advancing in the postseason.
The Eagles are 11-2 in the MSL-Cardinal Division and can share the league title with Fisher Catholic if they beat Fairfield Christian on Thursday, May 10, at home in a makeup from April 23.
Grove City Christian defeated the Knights 19-2 in five innings April 6. It would be Eagles' first league title since 2014.
"It would mean a lot because goal No. 1 is to win the league," coach A.J. McCampbell said. "For these seniors, it would be the first time they've been able to do it. It would be the first time since my first year when this senior class was in eighth grade. It would be huge to set out and accomplish goal No. 1."
Fisher Catholic secured at least a share of the league title with a 6-1 win over Grove City Christian on April 30 to finish 12-2 in MSL-Cardinal play. Berne Union lost to Wellington 11-10 on April 30 to finish 11-3 in the league.
In the postseason, the fifth-seeded Eagles were 15-4 overall before visiting third-seeded Morral Ridgedale in the second round May 9.
Grove City Christian defeated 13th-seeded Delaware Christian 13-1 in five innings in the first round May 7.
The second-round winner plays second-seeded Centerburg or 10th-seeded Fairfield Christian in a district semifinal Monday, May 14, at a neutral site to be determined.
The district final is Wednesday, May 16, at a neutral site to be determined.
The Eagles bounced back from their loss to Fisher Catholic to defeat Millersport 13-3 in five innings May 1 and 11-10 on May 3.
"Millersport hung around and fought (in the second game)," McCampbell said. "We're just happy to come out with that one-run win. ... With things on the line, it was nice to come through."
