Led by Michiah Burton, the New Albany High School football team used an effective ground game to beat host Dublin Scioto 37-21 on Aug. 30.

Burton rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries as the Eagles improved to 2-0.

The Irish slipped to 1-1.

“We came ready to play with the short week,” New Albany coach Matthew Kidwell said. “We missed that Wednesday practice, so we had our normal Thursday take off on a Wednesday, but our kids came ready to play. I’m very proud of them. The offensive line did a great job.”

Burton’s 2-yard touchdown run capped a 57-yard drive on his team’s first possession, giving the Eagles a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Grant Rogers’ 20-yard field goal pushed the lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter before Scioto responded with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Kyron Rogers to Tobias Thomas to pull the Irish to within 10-7 with 9:07 left in the first half.

New Albany, however, answered just before halftime, as it capped a 93-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by Brode White with 16 seconds left.

The score was set up by quarterback Luke Muter’s 21-yard pass to Gabe Owuso-Antwi on fourth-and-5 at the Scioto 28.

The Eagles stretched their lead to 31-7 in the third quarter.

Rogers led the Irish, completing 16 of 31 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Kenyon Pannell had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

“Our ability to have adversity and respond is the key,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “When we get that together, then we’re going to be a good team because we have the guys who can make the plays and we’re close.”
