Turnovers helped give the Dublin Coffman High School football team a 38-25 victory at Gahanna Lincoln on Aug. 31, but its own miscues disappointed coach Mark Crabtree.

The Shamrocks improved to 2-0 by converting two of the four Lions turnovers into touchdowns, but two late fumbles by Coffman and a blocked punt on its 6-yard line allowed Gahanna to score twice in the fourth quarter to make the game interesting.

“We need to be a better practice team and that shows when you play on Friday nights,” Crabtree said. “We have some young kids, but they have to mature as a group, and that starts on the practice field.”

The Shamrocks forced three first-half turnovers, converting two into touchdowns.

On the first play from scrimmage, Gahanna quarterback Will Thomas and running back Justus Harris had a bad handoff exchange and Irwin White pounced on the fumble at the Lions’ 25-yard line.

Three plays later, Moussa Diallo scored the first of his three touchdowns, a 6-yard run with 10 minutes, 32 seconds left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Noah Smith intercepted a Thomas pass at the Gahanna 10 and returned it five yards. Diallo followed with a 2-yard scoring run with 9:15 left in the half.

The Lions answered with a 99-yard kickoff return by Harris with 9:01 remaining in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 20-13.

Joey Mitchell had a 38-yard field goal and Diallo scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter, and Bryon Threats added an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the fourth to extend Coffman’s lead.

Harris had a 9-yard touchdown run and Thomas had an 8-yard scoring run in the fourth for the Lions.

“We were better than last week (a 31-0 loss to Cincinnati Elder),” said Gahanna coach Bruce Ward, whose team dropped to 0-2. “We had better prep this week, but need to have great prep. We have to clean a lot of things up and go each rep like it’s your last rep.”

Diallo finished with 94 yards rushing on 23 carries. Mike Drennen added 48 yards rushing and one score on 11 carries and caught six passes for 55 yards. Quarterback Ethan Brown was 10-for-16 passing for 100 yards.

For the Lions, Thomas was 16-for-26 passing for 116 yards and added 64 yards rushing on nine carries. Harris had 52 yards on 15 carries.
