Reynoldsburg High School football coach Buddy White presented his team with two specific goals as his players prepared for their Week 2 matchup — hold host Licking Heights to under 100 total yards and gain more than 400.

The Raiders did both, improving to 2-0 with a 44-0 victory on Aug. 31 over a program that has made five playoff appearances since 2006.

Reynoldsburg finished with 414 total yards while limiting Licking Heights to 38.

“This is a proud program,” White said of the Hornets. “It makes me that much more happy that we played as well as we did against a really, really proud team.”

The Raiders took control in the second quarter when Michael Whatley hit Shon Strickland on a catch-and-run touchdown for 30 yards, finishing a two-play drive to make it 21-0 at halftime.

Whatley competed 13 of 18 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. His 37-yard touchdown throw to Mershawn Rice in the third quarter made it 31-0.

Four Reynoldsburg players scored on touchdown runs of 9, 11, 5 and 5 yards.

The Raiders finished with 214 yards rushing as Courtland Bullard led the way with 45 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

J’Vonte Edwards (44 yards, 6 carries) and MarcAnthony Gray (43 yards, 4 carries) were the other top rushers.

Strickland caught four passes for 91 yards.

“Once we got going, we got that snowball rolling downhill, and our kids accepted the challenge and took control of the game,” White said.

Licking Heights, which dropped to 1-1, finished with just four first downs and converted only one third down in seven tries and had two turnovers.

“This is worst defeat we’ve had in a while,” Hornets coach Darren Waters said “That’s one of the best Reynoldsburg teams I’ve seen in a long time. … That’s a good football team.”
