The Upper Arlington High School football team kept pace with visiting Cincinnati Winton Woods — last year’s Division II state runner-up — but came up a touchdown short in a shootout that wasn’t decided until the final drive.

The Warriors racked up 31 second-quarter points en route to a 52-45 victory Sept. 7 and improved to 2-1.

Isaiah Andrews’ 70-yard touchdown pass to Demeer Blankumsee gave Winton Woods the lead for good with 1 minute, 30 seconds left after UA’s Chris Schweisthal had scored on a 15-yard run to make it 45-all with 2:37 to play.

“It was one of those games that probably takes years off your life,” Winton Woods coach Andre Parker said. “There were so many peaks and valleys. I’m very, very proud of our guys coming on the road.”

Winton Wood’s rushing attack highlighted the night with Miyan Williams scoring on touchdown runs of 9, 60, 1 and 98 yards. He gained 260 yards on 20 carries, and the Warriors finished with 309 yards rushing.

A blocked punt set up Williams’ 1-yard score, which ended a barrage of six touchdowns in the final six minutes of the first half, with Winton Woods holding a 38-24 halftime lead.

UA fought back in the second half, with Sammy Sass’ 35-yard touchdown throw to Josh Rushin cutting the Warriors’ lead to 38-31 before Williams broke free for his 98-yard score to make it 44-31 before the extra point.

The Bears' Eli D’Herete then scored from 1-yard out with 4:33 left, making it 45-38 to set up the wild finish.

“There’s no quit in Golden Bears, and we talk a lot about Golden Bears’ spirit around here,” UA coach Joel Cutler said. “I told the boys that games like this get you ready for down the stretch. All of our goals are still intact, and we start OCC play next week.”

Schweisthal finished with 111 yards on 18 carries for the Bears, who dropped to 1-2. Sass completed eight of 20 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, both caught by Rushin.

The teams combined for 883 yards of offense.
