The community hype leading up to the game Sept. 7 between the Dublin Coffman and Dublin Jerome high school football teams lived up to its billing for one half.

The visiting Shamrocks took command in the second half, outscoring the Celtics 35-0 for a 45-14 win in the first meeting between the programs since 2013.

“We’ve been here before,” Coffman coach Mark Crabtree said. “This is Dublin Coffman. This isn’t some new program. We’ve played in a lot of games like this. I’ve been here 18 years and we’ve been in a lot of environments like this. This is not new for us.”

Coffman improved to 3-0 and Jerome fell to 1-2.

Trailing 14-10 at halftime, Coffman took nearly seven minutes off the clock to begin the second half, with the drive capped by Mike Drennen’s 7-yard touchdown run to give the Shamrocks the lead for good at 17-14.

Moussa Diallo added a 6-yard scoring run and Drennen followed with a 24-yard touchdown run for a 34-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Drennen rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, and Diallo added 81 yards and one score on 10 carries.

Coffman outgained Jerome 340-209 in total yards.

Jerome built its 14-10 lead behind quarterback Hayden Schell, who connected with Luke Martin for a 10-yard touchdown and later capped an 81-yard drive with a 1-yard run with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.

“The first half we played well,” Schell said. “We moved the ball and stopped them on defense. We came out to play. We studied film and got it done. Coffman made adjustments in the second half and we didn't make many adjustments. They just pounded the ball up the middle.”

Trailing 7-0, Coffman tied the game on Drennen’s 3-yard run from the wildcat formation.

Joey Mitchell’s 20-yard field goal gave the Shamrocks their first lead at 10-7 midway through the second quarter.

Schell completed eight of 21 passes for 116 yards with one interception. Trey Ballengee had two catches for 65 yards.

Coffman now leads the series 3-0, with the other wins coming in 2012 (48-6) and 2013 (16-14).
