Coach Amanda Mosely has seen ups and downs in her first season leading the Westerville North High School girls volleyball team.

The Warriors won their first three matches then lost five consecutive contests before defeating visiting Reynoldsburg 25-19, 25-14 on Sept. 8. They lost to Mosely's former team, Licking Heights, 25-18, 12-25, 25-22 earlier that day.

"When they are successful, their energy level is higher, they're moving and they're talking," said Mosely, whose team was 4-5 overall before playing Delaware on Sept. 11. "That's when they are playing as a team and not as individuals."

North is 0-2 in the OCC-Buckeye Division after losing to Westerville Central 23-25, 25-12, 18-25, 25-23, 16-14 on Sept. 4 and Olentangy 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 on Sept. 6.

"We know the (Olentangy schools) are going to be the big guns (in the league), so when we play them it's all about effort and energy for us," Mosely said. "If we are playing the way that we should be playing and we still lose then that's the way it is. We still played the best that we could.

"When the effort's not there, that's when the frustration from my side will come in. But they have been playing tough, they have been playing hard even when they have lost a couple of tough matches. We have to get over that and figure out how to get those wins."

Cameron Calhoun had 24 kills in the two league matches. Clarke Gilchrist had five blocks against Olentangy, and Addy Moore had 22 assists against Central.

"I think the season is going well," Calhoun said. "We've had some rough patches, but once we get through those we're doing fine.

"We're successful when we're listening to coach, hustling back and getting to the ball. When we start getting down ourselves, that's when we do bad. We play better when we have a lot of energy."

Calhoun said Mosely is a constant source of energy for the Warriors.

"When she's (coaching) in the game, she hypes us up a lot and makes sure we have energy," Calhoun said. "She forces us to have energy."

Boys soccer team picks up first win

Jacob Grant scored twice to help lead the boys soccer team to its first win of the season, 6-0 over visiting Canal Winchester on Sept. 8.

The Warriors were 1-6 before opening OCC-Buckeye play Sept. 11 against Central.

Goalkeeper Sam Olson had 10 saves against the Indians. Also scoring were Jovonni Auddino, Cameron Coughlin, Rron Thaci and Owen Thompson.

"I'm happy for the boys," coach Drew Buttermore said. "Today, we played our game and got a good result. We probably had our best week of practice and we finally are getting healthy, which also helped.

"We discussed the momentum. We knew if we picked up a win here (against the Indians), we could ride that high into the league schedule. We knew we could play together, we just needed a result. I think you'll see a different team out there the rest of the season."

Girls tennis team wins first match

The girls tennis team improved to 1-8 overall by defeating Whitehall 5-0 on Sept. 10.

Anyce Sewell, Charlotte Miller and Hannah Ford won in singles. The doubles teams of Aubrey McMahon and Maddie Jones and Emily Buss and Emylee Preston also won.

The Warriors are 0-4 in the OCC-Buckeye. They had their final league match against Olentangy Orange postponed Sept. 6 because of bad weather and rescheduled for Oct. 1.

North lost its first six matches 5-0 before falling to Westerville South 3-2 on Sept. 4 in league play and Hilliard Davidson 3-2 on Sept. 5.

McMahon won at first singles in both matches, and Jones won at second singles against South. The second doubles team of Buss and Preston was the other winning court against Davidson.
