Kentucky’s defending Division 5A high school football state champion traveled two hours to collect its 21st consecutive victory, defeating host DeSales 35-14 on Sept. 21.

Covington Catholic, which improved to 5-0, closed the game with four unanswered touchdowns, including Caleb Jacob’s 30-yard throw to Jack Coldiron on fourth-and-7 about midway through the fourth quarter.

Casey McGinness, who finished with 202 yards on 28 carries, added two touchdown runs. The senior’s 22-yard score gave the Colonels a 7-0 lead following a seven-play, 70-yard opening drive, and his 2-yard touchdown run made it 21-14 in the third quarter.

McGinness also had an interception to set up the final score, a 1-yard touchdown run by Daniel Felix with 1:59 left.

“When you’re playing good people, you need to make the most of your opportunities, because you can only hold them off for so long, and that’s exactly the way it played out,” DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins said.

The Stallions missed two field goals and saw drives killed by penalties. The teams combined for 274 yards in penalties.

DeSales, which dropped to 3-2, capitalized on turnovers to score both of its second-quarter touchdowns, including a fumble recovery in the end zone with 11:33 left in the half to tie the score at 7.

Robert Robinson’s interception at midfield set up a three-play, 54-yard drive that ended with Reno Godfrey’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Owen Faulkner, giving the Stallions a 14-7 lead.

Covington Catholic responded with a 10-play, 62-yard drive capped by Jacob's 1-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14 with 1:09 left in the second quarter.

Godfrey, who left the game in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a leg injury, completed 20 of 32 passes for 242 yards.
