The Pickerington High School Central football team pulled off a dramatic rally to stun host Hilliard Davidson 17-14 in overtime Sept. 21.

The Tigers, who improved to 5-0, trailed 14-7 when Demeatric Crenshaw connected with Jaquwon Crawford for a 24-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-8 with 1 minute, 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The tying score was set up when the Tigers took over at the Davidson 26 following a short punt by Sean Carrier, who had to race back to scoop up a high snap from center.

Central pulled out the victory in overtime on Drew Bookman’s 21-yard field goal. The winning kick came after Terry Simuel recovered a fumble by Davidson’s Jordan Hicks on the Wildcats’ first play of overtime.

“The one thing I like about our kids is they fought every yard that (Davidson) got,” Central coach Jay Sharrett said. “We’re glad to be 5-0 and getting ready to go into our league competition. We’re going to have to heal up from this and I know they will, too. We’ll probably see them down the line or they’ll see us.”

Tied at 7 at halftime, Davidson took its lone lead when Hicks capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats ran 9:43 off the clock to open the half.

The Tigers opened the scoring on Crenshaw’s 84-yard touchdown pass to Lorenzo Styles with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Davidson tied the game at 7 on Hicks’ 1-yard run with 3:09 left in the first half.

Kalib O’Connor led Davidson with 90 yards on 31 carries, while Crenshaw was 6-for-11 passing for 122 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.

“We didn’t come to lose. We didn’t come to play close. We didn’t come to do anything but win,” said Davidson coach Brian White, whose team fell to 4-1. “We put a lot of effort into it. The kids gave tremendous effort tonight and we came up short. We can’t let a night like tonight and the effort we put in cause us to come out flat for practice next week, to come out flat for the game next week.”

The game was delayed nearly an hour with 7:28 left in the second quarter because of lightning.
