The Hilliard Bradley High School football team continued its bid for a third consecutive OCC-Cardinal Division title with a 46-17 victory at Dublin Scioto on Sept. 28.

The Jaguars improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, while the Irish fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Last season, Bradley finished first in the league at 6-0 ahead of runner-up Dublin Jerome (5-1). In 2016, Bradley and Jerome shared the conference title at 5-1.

Griffin Veil completed 17 of 23 passes for 320 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Jaguars. Jack Richards added 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Leading 14-10 at halftime, Bradley outscored the Irish 32-0 in the third quarter to take control. The Jaguars took advantage of three Scioto fumbles in the quarter.

Bradley struck quickly in the second half as Veil hit Jack Duffer for a 57-yard touchdown and a 21-10 lead with 9 minutes, 30 seconds left in the third quarter. The Jaguars were never challenged again.

“We weren’t playing very well in the first half, with some of our flat stuff we were doing with our strong safety and our Will linebacker,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “We cleaned up some of that stuff at halftime. We were doing too much coaching-wise and we just trimmed it all down and said go out and play, joker around and confuse them instead of confusing ourselves.”

Bradley held its 14-10 halftime lead after Veil’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Day with 1:06 left in the second quarter.

The Jaguars opened the scoring late in the first quarter with an 11-yard pass from Veil to Zach Hummel, but Scioto took a 10-7 lead on Kyron Rogers 8-yard touchdown pass to Kenyon Pannell and Griffin Crosa’s 36-yard field goal.

Rogers completed 21 of 32 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown, and Pete Hrelec rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries to lead the Irish.

“They’re a good team,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “We don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves. We were in a 14-10 game coming out of (halftime) and we had three turnovers. That hurt. They made plays. Don’t take anything away from them.”
