The Harvest Preparatory School football team lived up to its reputation for running the ball throughout most of its key MSL-Cardinal Division matchup Oct. 5 at home against Berne Union, but its defense more than did its part.

After the Warriors built a seven-point halftime lead, Joseph Temple and Shedarion Waugh sacked Rockets quarterback Zane Mirgon for a 10-yard loss at the Berne Union 12 to force a punt midway through the third quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Daquan Owens-Johnson scored on a 20-yard run to seal a 22-7 victory that improved Harvest Prep to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Berne Union moved to the Harvest Prep 33 early in the fourth quarter, but Temple was part of a group that tackled Mirgon for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-4.

While the Rockets dropped to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the MSL-Cardinal, Harvest Prep has won 29 consecutive league games.

“Mostly it was about our resolve,” Warriors coach Milan Smith said. “We needed to be in a dogfight. We anticipated a dogfight.”

Berne Union took a 7-0 lead when Mirgon pitched the ball to Chaz Dickerson, who then threw to an open Kolt Colbertson for a 50-yard touchdown.

That was the Rockets’ only lead, however, as the Warriors tied the game on the ensuing drive.

Harvest Prep drove 58 yards on 10 plays and tied the score at 7 on a 1-yard run by Owens-Johnson with 5 minutes, 2 seconds to go in the first quarter.

The Warriors made it 14-7 with 9:20 left in the first half when quarterback Moses Davis ran for a 5-yard touchdown. That completed an 18-play, 85-yard drive that included a 17-yard run by Davis on fourth-and-6 from the Rockets’ 47.

The Warriors had touchdowns called back because of penalties on their final two first-half possessions.

Owens-Johnson, who has taken over at running back after the Warriors lost the state’s all-time leading rusher, Daniel Bangura, to graduation, finished with 135 yards.

“We came out and gave it our very best effort for four quarters,” Owens-Johnson said. “We come out here and fight and never give up until the last down.”
