Even before the October portion of its schedule began, the Reynoldsburg High School girls soccer team had equaled its eight-win total from last season.

The Raiders went 6-0-1 in their first seven games before losing six of their next eight contests.

"We felt more confident for this season with so many returning players and a strong freshman class," sophomore Ryanne Buck said. "For our first seven games, our defense only gave up four goals and the offense was finishing their chances."

Buck has led the way offensively, producing 20 goals through 15 games.

The Raiders were 8-6-1 overall and 0-4 in the OCC-Ohio Division before closing the regular season Oct. 9 at Lancaster.

Last season, Reynoldsburg's only league win was a 1-0 victory over the Golden Gales.

The 21st-seeded Raiders open the Division I district tournament Monday, Oct. 15, at home against 31st-seeded Teays Valley, with the winner to play Oct. 18 at 16th-seeded Olentangy Liberty in second round.

After beating Watkins Memorial 5-0 on Sept. 29, Reynoldsburg lost 8-0 to Pickerington North on Oct. 2 and 2-0 to Westerville North on Oct. 4.

Buck scored all five of the Raiders' goals against Watkins Memorial.

"We need to improve on keeping possession and making good decisions," Buck said. "We turn the ball over a lot, which leads to scoring chances against us."

Boys soccer team has strong regular season

Before closing the regular season Oct. 9 at home against Lancaster, the boys soccer team was 7-3-5 overall and 1-2-1 in the OCC-Ohio.

The Raiders went 3-1-2 in their previous six games, including beating Pickerington Central 2-0 on Sept. 25 for their first league win and defeating Westerville North 3-1 on Oct. 4.

The Raiders are the 18th seed for the Division I district tournament and open Wednesday, Oct. 17, at home against 27th-seeded Teays Valley in a first-round game. The winner plays Oct. 20 at home against 30th-seeded Watkins Memorial.

Reynoldsburg, which went 7-4-6 last season, got goals from Pawan Rai and Siujit Khatiwoda against Westerville North. In a 3-1 loss to Pickerington North on Oct. 2, Yobiel Fishation scored and goalkeeper Brady Frydl made four saves.

Boys golfers fall short of district

For the second consecutive season, sophomore Jamison Boykins of the boys golf team fell one stroke short of having a chance to advance to the Division I district tournament.

On Oct. 2 in a sectional at Turnberry, Boykins shot a 78 to tie for 15th, but Mount Vernon's Jordan Hoag and Thomas Worthington's Aaron Zeller both shot a 77 to earn the final two district-qualifying berths.

"(Boykins) had some putts he missed that normally he would make," coach Scott Walters said. "He had a stretch where every match was par. He shot 72 (at Turnberry) two weeks ago, so he's really capable. He's disappointed, I know, because he wanted to play better. He's only a sophomore and he's in all kinds of tournaments."

Senior Trey Albert shot an 85 at sectional, followed by freshman Alex Perez (98), senior Keean Durkin (99) and junior Robbie Crawford (120) as the Raiders placed 11th (360) of 13 teams, behind champion Olentangy Liberty (303).

The top four teams and top four individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to district.

"(Albert) would beat Jamison in nine-hole matches most of the time, but when it came to 18, he always seemed to struggle a little bit," Walters said.

"He went 5-over on the last two holes."

Girls tennis season ends at sectional

The girls tennis team had its season end at a Division I sectional Oct. 5 at home.

In singles, junior Hope Chaffin and senior Alexa Matan each lost in the second round and senior Nandi Rowe lost in the first round.

In doubles, senior Katelyn Whetsel and junior Abi Swift lost in the second round and juniors Nia Harris and Feaven Gebrezgi lost in a quarterfinal.

The Raiders lost seven of their first nine matches to finish 6-9 overall and 0-5 in the OCC-Ohio.
