It's been a decade since the Wellington School girls soccer team experienced postseason success like this.
On Oct. 24, the third-seeded Jaguars played top-seeded Worthington Christian in a Division III district semifinal, with the winner to face second-seeded Grandview or fourth-seeded Columbus Academy in a district final Saturday, Oct. 27, at a neutral site to be determined.
Wellington last made it to a district semifinal in 2008, when it did so for the second consecutive season. It last won a district championship in 2004, when it was in Division II and there were only two divisions.
"I'm most proud of how focused and gritty the girls have been playing," coach Lindsey Smith said. "They're completely committed to their preseason goal of winning a district title."
If the Jaguars win a district title, they will play Zanesville Rosecrans, Cadiz Harrison Central, Berlin Hiland or Richmond Edison in a regional semifinal Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Lakewood. The regional final is Nov. 3.
After opening the postseason with a 6-0 win over 14th-seeded Marion Pleasant on Oct. 16, Wellington beat fifth-seeded Fairbanks 4-0 on Oct. 18 in the second round to improve to 10-2-5.
According to Smith, the trio of Chloe Locker, Maddy Morosky and Catherine Zallanta has led the way offensively.
"(We want to have) confident and aggressive play," Smith said. "It's a selfless approach to committing to our team goal."
Boys soccer team reaches district semi
After being a Division III district runner-up last season, the second-seeded boys soccer team moved another step closer to at least reaching that level when it opened the postseason with a 2-0 victory Oct. 17 over 13th-seeded Columbus International.
The win advanced the Jaguars to a district semifinal Oct. 23 against 10th-seeded Grove City Christian, with the winner to play fifth-seeded Worthington Christian or ninth-seeded Liberty Union in a district final Saturday, Oct. 27, at a neutral site to be determined.
The district champion plays Grandview, Horizon Science, Fairbanks or Johnstown in a regional semifinal Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Gahanna. The regional final is Nov. 3.
Last season, Wellington lost to Worthington Christian 1-0 in a district final.
The Jaguars were 12-4-1 before facing Grove City Christian.
"(International) was a scrappy opponent that really competed in a do-or-die situation," coach J.J. Bain said. "They tried to press us, but we wore them out over the course of the game. It was nice to see our senior captain defender, Katz Kadlic, get a great goal. Freddie Lin had a spectacular goal from a distance."
