Ethan Brown ran the show in his final home game for the Dublin Coffman High School football team.

The senior quarterback ran for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the second-seeded Shamrocks past seventh-seeded Westerville Central 27-10 on Nov. 2 in the opening round of the Division I, Region 2 playoffs.

Coffman improved to 10-1 and advanced to play third-seeded Toledo Whitmer in a regional semifinal Nov. 9, while Central finished 5-6.

“Football is all about momentum and we needed to get it quickly,” said Brown, who was 11-for-19 passing for 123 yards and one touchdown and rushed nine times for 43 yards and three scores. “Once you get momentum, especially in the playoffs, it’s tough to stop it.”

Coffman led 14-10 at halftime, but seized control early in the second half with a 12-play, 77-yard drive that took 5 minutes, 48 seconds off the clock. Brown capped the scoring drive with a 7-yard run to put the Shamrocks up 21-10 and shift the momentum further.

“We needed to get in some sort of rhythm at that particular moment and grinding the ball and running our quarterback, running back and slot(back) was the best way to do that,” Coffman coach Mark Crabtree said. “We needed to generate first downs and get in the end zone, which wasn’t easy. Westerville Central did a great job defensively and gave us some problems.”

Coffman recovered two fumbles that led a pair of touchdowns.

Tate Islay pounced on a Central fumble at the Warhawks’ 26-yard line on the game’s first possession, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Brown.

The first half was split with Coffman controlling the first quarter and the Warhawks dominating the second.

Central got a 1-yard touchdown run by Ricky Hyatts with 8:12 left in the second quarter and Jacob Borcila made a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the Warhawks’ deficit to 14-10.

Moussa Diallo rushed for 93 yards on 23 carries for Coffman, and Mike Drennen caught three passes for 36 yards.

Hyatts rushed for 134 yards and one score on 21 carries to lead the Warhawks.
