The Centennial High School boys swimming and diving team is seeking the missing piece for its 200-yard freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
Seniors Shawn Jacobsen and Nathan Massey and junior Kyle Juracich are expected to lead the Stars after being on those relays last season when both qualified for the Division II district meet.
Both lineups also consisted of 2018 graduate Danny Edgington. The 200 free relay placed sixth (1 minute, 34.47 seconds) and the 200 medley relay was 10th (1:50.26) at district.
"We're looking to get all three relays to district this season," said third-year coach Leanne Rubadue, who guides the boys and girls teams with second-year coach Michael Barnes. "We want better finishes or podium finishes in all three as well. We'd like to qualify multiple athletes to state."
Edgington was the team's lone state qualifier last season. He finished 14th in diving (317.5 points) after placing third (370.6) at district to earn the final state-qualifying berth.
"Our other goals are to win the City (League) championship and qualify more athletes to district than last season," Rubadue said. "We've got some strong freshmen in (swimmer) Nick Rivers and (diver) Alec Proudfoot that should help our returning guys."
Jacobsen set the school record in the 100 free (49.98) while finishing sixth at district a year ago. He also placed fifth in the 50 free (22.59).
Also at district, Juracich was 16th in the 200 individual medley (2:22.68).
"Nathan is strong in the individual medley and in the backstroke, and Kyle is strong in the individual medley and the breaststroke," Rubadue said. "Shawn has things covered in freestyle and butterfly. So we've got some balance. Those three are our captains."
Jacobsen was the City champion in the 100 free (50.05) and 50 free (23.12) last season as the Stars finished second (109) behind Whetstone (123). Also winning titles were Edgington in diving (245.5) and the 400 free relay of Juracich, Jacobsen, Edgington and sophomore Dominic Richards (3:44.73).
"We have great leadership with solid returnees and some new, young guys," Rubadue said. "We are encouraged by the number of athletes interested in diving this year, on both the boys and girls teams."
Also on the boys roster are senior Evan Roush, juniors Kleo Kapaj, Evan Massey, Taiki Okano and Andrew Smith, sophomores Jacob Barnes, Justin Bridges, Dylan Ford, Jeff Kimball and Jabe Miller and freshmen Tommy Moran and Aiden Szolosi.
Proudfoot is a diver only, but Kimball, Miller and Szolosi will compete in swimming and diving.
The girls team will be young this season, as only junior Cada Dixon returns after competing in the Division I district meet a year ago.
"Cada is strong in freestyle and butterfly and was on the 200 free relay at district last season," Rubadue said. "She is one of four captains that give us good, young leadership."
The others are senior Maggie Roush and juniors Lexi Cox and Mary LaForrest. Cox is captain of the diving squad.
"We have a lot of new swimmers, but 10 of the 16 girls on the roster are freshmen or sophomores," Rubadue said. "(Freshman) Anna Dixon is very coachable and shows lots of potential in all events, so we haven't settled on her strokes yet. It'll be interesting to see how and where all of the newcomers fit and watch their development."
At district, Centennial's 400 free relay of 2018 graduates Kaylee Beyer and Kara DeVol, Cada Dixon and junior Yana Napier was disqualified and Beyer placed 12th in diving (129.45).
Napier did not return this season. She won the 100 back (1:10.91) and 50 free (27.82) in the City meet and Beyer won diving (159.35), as the Stars placed second (95) behind Whetstone (124).
Other returnees are juniors Zoe Dickinson and Nina Zimmerman and sophomore Amanda Varian.
Completing the roster are sophomores Joy Chambers, Charity Davis, Summer Kaiser and Bella Moore and freshmen Haley Flood, Esther Gilliam, Olivia Hoffman and Maddie Nelson.
Moore is a diver only, while Davis, Dickinson and Gilliam also will be diving.
