As the Columbus Academy boys and girls bowling teams competed against Centennial on Dec. 14 at HP Lanes, coach Michael Hoffman went from lane to lane, encouraging and congratulating each member of the program.

With a pair of teams that lack experience, Hoffman is emphasizing learning the game while also having fun.

"Columbus Academy always has fun and they always do well," said Hoffman, who is in his third season. "Our team always has the spirit. We're rebuilding. The boys had a tough day (against Centennial)."

The boys have been led by sophomore Vinny White, who had a 144.3 average through five matches. White, who is in his first season, had a 211 high game in a 1,641-1,607 loss to Centennial.

"I came out for the team because I've been bowling since (I was young)," White said. "I never bowled in a competition, but I bowled with my family. My parents are really good bowlers and I guess I got the love for bowling from them. I just want to do the best that I can."

Freshman Ryan Reagan had a 137.5 average through five matches.

Sophomore returnee Alexander Wood had a 132.1 average, and junior returnee Michael Hoffman had a 127.9 average. Hoffman, who is the coach's son, is in his third season with the Vikings.

Sophomore Cole Leis also returns.

Senior Will Mathews is in his first season.

The Vikings were 1-4 in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference-C Division before facing Columbus South on Dec. 19. They defeated Columbus West 1,589-1,169 on Dec. 6.

"The boys are confident," coach Hoffman said. "They actually already have a win this year, which is nice."

A key loss to graduation was Michael Reagan, who concluded his prep career by finishing 52nd (416) of 79 competitors in the Division II district tournament. Michael and Ryan Reagan are brothers.

For the girls team, senior Katie Wunsch and junior Nikki Turley are key returnees looking to provide leadership for an inexperienced group.

Junior Sanskruti Admane also returns. Other bowlers are senior Julia Gurevitz, junior Gianna Bates, sophomores Divya Narayanan and Evelyn Olexio and freshman Tara Hoffman, who is the coach's daughter.

The Vikings were 1-4 in the COHSBC-C before facing South. They beat West 1,214-1,114.

Hoffman is being assisted by first-year coach Gerardina Garita.
