The Dublin Scioto High School gymnastics team consists of just four sophomores looking to improve their skills.

Alex Gordon, Tricia Klosterman and Sara Sun have returned and Britney Vo has joined the team after competing in club.

"When you have a small team and you have kids that maybe don't have as much club experience as some others, it's really about personal growth, like trying to get all of their special requirements on the events and get new skills," third-year coach Kristen Willms said. "Hopefully, we can add some numbers next year, which will help our ability to set a lineup."

Scioto competed in the 14-team Hilliard Invitational on Dec. 15 at Davidson, finishing 13th (85.275) behind champion Jerome (136.05) and ahead of Coffman (73.15).

Gordon led the Irish, finishing 34th in the all-around (28.275) and tying for 17th on vault (7.6).

"The fact that we have the majority of the girls from last year, it's really nice to get that culture within again and just grow as a team together," Gordon said.

Sun finished 37th in the all-around (27.25) and tied for 16th on vault (7.65). Vo was 26th on vault (7.0) and Klosterman competed on balance beam (5.2) and floor exercise (6.2).

"We're lacking in depth," Willms said. "They have a lot of pressure to compete in all four events because without them we're missing a score and it significantly reduces our all-around score. We want to get them on all four events. That's really what we're going for."

Last season, Sun led the Irish in the district meet, finishing 73rd (27.825) of 93 gymnasts in the all-around. Gordon was 80th (26.625), as Scioto finished 22nd (87.275) behind champion Thornville Sheridan (145.425).

The Irish went 0-6 in OCC-Cardinal Division dual meets and finished seventh in the overall league standings with four points, behind champion Hilliard Darby (28, 6-0).

Scioto opens its league schedule Jan. 19 when it competes against first-year Olentangy Berlin and Worthington Kilbourne as part of a four-team meet at Central Ohio Gymnastics.

Wrestlers finish 11th at North Canton Hoover

The wrestling team finished 11th (102.5 points) in the 59th annual North Canton Holiday Invitational held Dec. 14 and 15 at North Canton Hoover, behind champion Wadsworth (175) as 29 teams scored.

Deron Pulliam finished first at 195 pounds, while Dylan Le (106) and Daniel Segura (145) placed third and Bernie Duran (220) and Donovan Hardin (heavyweight) were fifth.

"North Canton is a great tournament with a ton of competition," coach Adam Huddle said. "Our kids had some ups and downs throughout the tournament, but finished really well in finals, going 5-0. Our young team needs to improve on consistency, but our coaching staff loves where we are in December."

Le (106) and Segura (152) won titles in the nine-team Olentangy Invitational on Dec. 1 as the Irish finished ninth (89.5) behind champion Olentangy (197.5).

The Irish opened OCC-Cardinal action with a 46-22 win at Kilbourne on Dec. 13. It was Scioto's fourth consecutive win against the Wolves.

Boys basketball team falls in overtime

The boys basketball team was 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the OCC-Cardinal before playing Darby on Dec. 18.

The Irish lost to host Delaware 64-57 in overtime in a league contest Dec. 14.

Scioto outscored the Pacers 22-5 in the second quarter and led 38-24 at halftime before being outscored 40-19 in the second half and overtime.

Dapreis Owens led the Irish with 23 points and Zach Gawronski scored 17.

Benjamin Lombardo had 14 points and Victor Mwamba scored 13 in a 69-50 loss at Canal Winchester on Dec. 11. The Irish trailed 27-9 after one quarter.

Girls basketball team out to good start

The girls basketball team entered its game against Darby on Dec. 18 looking to extend a four-game winning streak.

The Irish were 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the OCC-Cardinal before facing the Panthers.

Natalie Hutras had 22 points, Ashleigh Rothe scored 11 and Karleigh Rothe added 10 in a 64-42 league win over visiting Delaware on Dec. 14.
