The Delaware Christian School girls basketball team was not quite able to overcome a 12-point, fourth-quarter deficit in a 54-53 loss to host Shekinah Christian on Feb. 5.
The loss kept the Eagles from winning the MOCAL championship outright, as they finished 9-1 in the league to share the title with the Flames.
"We picked up our defensive intensity in the final three minutes and we made it 54-53 with five seconds left, but couldn't pull it out," said coach Jackie Boggs, whose team had beaten the Flames 44-41 on Jan. 5 behind 26 points and 20 rebounds from Lyssi Snouffer. "We didn't show up intense and were without Katie Neuhart for the second game in a row and she helps balance things out in the post with Lyssi.
"But the biggest problem was that we just didn't shoot well, except for Lyssi, who was 15-for-22 from the field. The rest of the team combined to go 6-for-33 and they had no confidence in themselves, so we're going to be working hard on shooting drills the rest of the season."
Delaware Christian, which had clinched at least a share of the MOCAL title by beating Madison Christian 65-13 at home on Jan. 25, was 16-4 overall before playing Village Academy on Feb. 7 and closed the regular season Feb. 9 against Fredericktown.
The Eagles are seeded fourth of 18 teams in the Division IV district tournament and will play host to 14th-seeded Wellington in the first round Feb. 21.
Snouffer had 36 points and 22 rebounds in the loss to Shekinah Christian. Abbi Maurer had six points, three steals and three blocks and Emma Rindfuss added five points and five rebounds.
