Mary Zerrien was on pins and needles as she waited to hear if her name would be called.

The junior for the Ready High School girls bowling team finally was able to celebrate after being announced as the third and final individual state qualifier from the Division II girls district tournament Feb. 21 at HP Lanes.

Zerrien rolled a 564 three-game series to advance to state at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. The girls compete March 1 and the boys compete the next day.

“(When I heard my score announced) I was like, ‘Oh my goodness,’ ” Zerrien said. “I was happy to be able to do this and make my coach (Russ Rehner) proud. This is my third time to district, but my first time making it out to state.”

Zerrien finished fourth overall behind medalist Courtney Melvin (580) of Utica. Melvin and Fredericktown’s Hannah Vaughan (575, third) were the other individual qualifiers while Jonathan Alder (3,471), Cardington (3,387) and Sparta Highland (3,353) advanced to state as teams.

Worthington Christian was sixth (3,130).

Olentangy Berlin’s Bella Bland tied for 15th (504).

In the boys tournament, Jonathan Alder (4,139), Highland (4,066) and Caledonia River Valley advanced to state. Highland’s Brennen McLaughlin (731) was medalist while Heath’s Tommy Sherman (698, third), Centerburg’s Cody Climer (666, fifth) and London’s Josh Corwin (640, sixth) qualified for state as individuals.

Worthington Christian was sixth (3,718). The Warriors’ Caleb Slagle and Hartley’s Victor Jackson tied for seventh (619).
