The defending Division III state champion Africentric Early College girls basketball team moved one step closer to returning to the state tournament with a blowout win March 6 in a regional semifinal at Lexington.

Jordan Horston made five 3-pointers and totaled 21 points as the Nubians beat Castalia Margaretta 66-35 to improve to 25-0. Africentric advanced to face Findlay Liberty-Benton in a regional final March 9 at Lexington.

“Jordan shot the ball really well,” coach Will McKinney said. “That 3-ball was falling for her.”

Margaretta, which finished 24-3, trailed 33-14 at halftime and was outscored 23-14 in the third quarter.

Alexia Smith added 15 points for Africentric and Nyam Thornton scored nine in her return after missing several games with a hand injury.

“It was Nyam’s first day back and she played really well,” McKinney said.

Liberty-Benton improved to 25-1 with a 62-30 victory over Delta in a regional semifinal March 5 at Ohio Northern. The Eagles feature 6-foot-4 junior post player Caitlin Elseser, who has more than 1,000 career points.

“They’ll be real good,” McKinney said. “They’ve got a 6-4 girl, so it’ll be interesting.”
