The Hilliard Davidson High School boys tennis team has bounced back after losing its first five matches against challenging competition.

The Wildcats were 10-9 overall after defeating Watterson 3-2 on May 6 and finished 2-2 in the OCC-Central Division, placing third behind Upper Arlington (4-0) and Dublin Coffman (3-1).

"We've gotten better as the season has gone on," coach Steve De Dent said. "We're 9-9 (before May 6), but people have to realize our first five matches were (against) Olentangy Liberty, Dublin Coffman, Olentangy, Dublin Jerome and Upper Arlington. Those are good programs and we competed. On a few of the courts, we were close to winning against some of those teams, so I think we've gotten better."

Davidson is hoping the momentum it has gained in recent weeks carries over to the postseason, which gets underway with a Division I sectional Thursday, May, 9, and Saturday, May 11, at Bradley.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to the district tournament May 16 and 18 at Reynoldsburg.

Senior Ethan Clark and junior Jack Kamnikar primarily played first and second singles, respectively, during the regular season but will team up to play doubles in the postseason and are seeded fourth at sectional.

Through 18 matches, Clark was 10-6 in singles play and Kamnikar was 8-8. They were 2-1 in doubles.

"I was happy with the draw," De Dent said. "Moving Ethan and Jack down to doubles got them seeded fourth. We don't have anybody else seeded, but everybody who is there has an opportunity to win at least one match and we'll see how far Jack and Ethan can go."

Also at sectional, senior Collin Lam, sophomore Isaac Gayetsky and freshman Hayes Houseworth will play singles, and senior Uday Patel and junior Timothy Liou will play doubles.

"This team is like my second family," Patel said. "I've learned so much from them. They're one of the memories that I will never forget. They're my whole life. We've definitely put in the work, so I expect to do well (in the postseason)."

The Wildcats defeated Dublin Scioto 4-1 on May 2.

Clark won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, Kamnikar won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles, Houseworth won 7-6. 6-4 at third singles and Patel and Liou won 7-6, 6-4 at first doubles.

Softball team soars past Hawks

The 23rd-seeded softball team defeated 35th-seeded Hartley 18-8 in five innings in the first round of the Division I district tournament May 6.

The Wildcats were 13-12 before playing 20th-seeded Darby in the second round May 8, with the winner likely playing top-seeded Westerville Central in a district semifinal Monday, May 13, at a neutral site to be determined.

The district final will be played May 17 or 18 at Pickerington Central.

"We are happy with the regular season," coach Katie Speakman said. "I think knowing we finished at .500 (in the regular season) is quite a step up from last season (5-19), but we want to continue to build on that. What I'm most proud of is that we consistently competed in every game. We had games where we were down five, six, seven runs and we'd find ways to come back. These girls never quit."

Through 24 games, Abby Mullins was batting .451, followed by CiCi Keidel (.414) and Natalie Myers (.373). Keidel (33), Myers (21) and Mullins (20) led the team in RBI, Keidel (32) and Carlie Champion (25) led in runs scored and Myers led in home runs (5).

Boys volleyball team preps for postseason

The boys volleyball team was 11-9 overall and 9-4 in the OCC-Central before playing Gahanna on May 7.

The Wildcats completed a regular-season sweep of UA by defeating the Golden Bears 25-14, 25-18, 25-13 on May 2.
