Josh Ipock always has been an avid sports enthusiast with a passion for golf.

So when the Grove City Christian boys team needed a coach, Ipock naturally was interested.

A 29-year-old math teacher at the school, Ipock replaced Josh Braniff, who stepped down after two seasons.

"I love the game of golf," Ipock said. "I love that golf is multifaceted. Golf is not just one technique or skill; it's multiple techniques and skills working together. There is always something to work on. I enjoy watching golf at all levels. Whether that's my 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter hitting balls in the backyard, watching our high school guys or going to the Memorial and watching the pros."

The Eagles' roster features 11 players but just two returnees in seniors Brandon VonIns and Tim Sullivan.

Other golfers are seniors Koby Brunney, Zach Lauron, Grant Milam and Grant Stedtefeld, sophomore Connor Benson and freshmen James Cuckler, Kolton DeVine, Kaden Garringer and Quinn Garringer.

"It's a good turnout," Ipock said. "We have six seniors and several freshmen. It's exciting. Sometimes they just want to come out and pick up the sport of golf. I've had them in class. They talked about golf. Some of them took an interest in it."

The Eagles opened by competing in the Teays Valley Invitational on Aug. 5 at The Players Club at Foxfire. They finished ninth (424) of 12 teams behind champion Grove City (317), and VonIns tied for 16th (87) of 66 golfers behind medalist Ian Johnston (75) of Grove City.

"We knew it was going to be a challenge for us," Ipock said. "We went off just seeing what we had for the season."

The Eagles finished third (447) in the three-team MSL-Cardinal Division preseason tournament Aug. 6 at West-chester behind Fisher Catholic (373) and Zanesville Rosecrans (389). VonIns finished fourth with a 92.

Gabe Baugess, a 2019 graduate who played last season, is a volunteer assistant coach.
