After a one-year absence, the Centennial girls volleyball team returned to the City League final last season.
With four starters returning this season, the Stars will be looking to make it back to the championship match and win it, after they fell to Eastmoor Academy 25-15, 25-16, 25-21 a year ago.
Centennial opened Aug. 22 by beating Beechcroft 25-23, 25-15, 25-8 in a league match. The Stars continued league play Aug. 27 against Northland.
"We've got six seniors who will provide a versatile and well-balanced leading group, which ensures a strong backing for the coaching staff to help build up the team for overall success on and off the court," said third-year coach Brittani Lewis, whose team finished 14-9 overall last season.
The Stars won four City titles in a row before Whetstone represented the City-North Division in the league final in 2017. Last year, Centennial and Whetstone both finished 13-1 in the City-North and the Stars were awarded the berth in the City final based on the Braves going the previous season.
Expected to lead the way as returning starters for Centennial are seniors Sky Harris (outside hitter), Naa Dromo Korley (middle hitter) and Nikita Reynolds (outside hitter/right-side hitter).
All earned all-league status last season. Harris was on the first team, Korley was on the second and Reynolds was honorable mention.
"Sky is a strong all-around player who knows the game well," Lewis said. "She hustles and has a strong skill set that aids in her ability to lead and guide her teammates by her actions.
"Naa Dromo has developed into her role as a positive reinforcer who consistently encourages her teammates to push for success and dominates the net with her blocking skills."
Senior Rhian Jones is a returning starter at setter and is a third-year letterwinner, along with Korley and Harris. Senior Jayana Harley (right-side hitter/defensive specialist) is a returning letterwinner, and Cherry Ocasio Miranda (defensive specialist) rounds out the six-member senior class.
"Rhian has developed a strong sense of leadership in her setting role for the team," Lewis said. "She is learning how to positively and effectively command the floor for her teammates to run efficient plays."
Completing the roster are juniors Erika Bautista (outside hitter), Cecilia Dingess (middle hitter) and Yazmine Segovia (libero/defensive specialist).
