Despite a couple of turnovers, the Dublin Jerome football team raced out to a big lead in the first half against visiting Central Crossing and rolled to a 34-3 victory on Aug. 30 in the season opener for both teams.

Running back Adam Booth had 85 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in the first half to help the Celtics take a 27-0 lead into halftime.

Booth opened the scoring with a 5-yard run in the first quarter and, later in the quarter, Easton Gross intercepted Comets quarterback Drew DeYarmon and returned the ball 25 yards for a touchdown to give Jerome a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Celtics quarterback Ryan Miller scored on a 15-yard run to make it 20-0 and Booth ran for an 8-yard touchdown to cap the first-half scoring. Miller added a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to stretch the Celtics’ lead to 34-0.

Miller was 9-for-20 passing for 78 yards and two interceptions, both in the first half. Seth Martin had five catches for 29 yards.

Despite the lopsided victory, Jerome coach Bob Gecewich wasn’t satisfied with his team’s performance.

“Way too sloppy, can’t fix genetics or things like that,” he said. “But, we can fix how we approach the game and how we play the game.

“We started 17 or 18 new guys. I really didn’t know what to expect. The downside is I can’t use the inexperience excuse anymore because now they all have played.”

Much of the second half was played with a running clock. Central Crossing got on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard field goal by Tyler Terrell.

DeYarmon was 7-for-14 passing for 108 yards, including a 32-yard completion to Anthony Lowe.

“We know we’re a young team, and we understood that,” Central Crossing coach Trevor White said. “But, if it could go wrong tonight, it went wrong. Too many errors to win a football game tonight, let alone against a great football team like the Celtics.”
