The Hilliard Bradley football team found itself in a big hole against visiting Springfield after the first quarter of its season opener Aug. 30 and never recovered.

The Wildcats raced out to a 21-0 lead in the opening quarter and extended their advantage to 27-0 by halftime en route to a 44-7 victory.

Springfield amassed 560 total yards, including 324 in the first half. Leading the way for the Wildcats were quarterback Te’Sean Smoot and running back Jeff Tolliver.

Smoot completed 12 of 22 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 1-yard run, while Tolliver rushed for 154 yards on six carries — a 25.7-yard average — and a touchdown. Tay’Veon Smoot added 81 yards rushing and two scores on 11 carries.

“That’s our plan all the time,” Springfield coach Maurice Douglas said. “If we can stay balanced, it keeps them off balance defensively. I think that works in our favor.”

Bradley was led by quarterback A.J. Mirgon, who rushed 15 times for 87 yards and completed 10 of 21 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Evan Yee rushed 12 times for 31 yards and Matthew Drovdlic added seven carries for 28 yards for the Jaguars, whose only score came in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard pass from Mirgon to Tayshaun Mayfield.

Mayfield caught four passes for 30 yards and Ethan Poff had four receptions for 20 yards.

“We’ve been dealing with this issue really since scrimmage season,” Bradley coach Mike LoParo said. “We just haven’t been finishing drives.”
