Two third-quarter interceptions fueled the Dublin Jerome football team’s 45-14 win over DeSales on Sept. 6, giving the host Celtics their first 2-0 start since 2016.

Jacob Nally’s 44-yard interception return for a score gave Jerome a 28-14 lead in the third quarter.

About three minutes later, Jack Soehner intercepted DeSales quarterback Reno Godfrey for the third time, and on the next play, Adam Booth scored his third touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run.

“We played solid offensively … but I thought our defense stepped up, and it was different kids every time,” Jerome coach Bob Gecewich said. “That’s just part of the maturation process, and hopefully, we can keep it going.”

Jerome scored 31 unanswered points starting with Ryan Miller’s 12-yard touchdown throw to Booth with 18 seconds left in the second quarter, giving the Celtics a 21-14 halftime lead.

Miller, who scored on two 1-yard runs, rushed for 44 yards on 15 carries and completed nine of 17 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions.

Easton Gross had an interception and made a 32-yard field goal with 5:14 left in the third quarter to put the Celtics up 31-14.

DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins, whose team dropped to 1-1, pointed to his team’s four turnovers.

“That’s what happens when you don’t play well against good teams,” he said. “They played a lot better than we did in every phase of the game.”

Both of DeSales’ first-half touchdowns came on big plays.

Godfrey hit Jordan Johnson from 36 yards to make it 7-all in the first quarter, and Quintell Quinn’s 55-yard run tied the game at 14 with 3:01 left in the second quarter.

Quinn finished with 120 yards on 15 carries, and Godfrey completed 10 of 24 passes for 115 yards.
