The Columbus School for Girls golf team has had no trouble acclimating itself to the MSL-Ohio Division.
In fact, the Unicorns are excelling in their first season in the MSL-Ohio, as they are 12-0 in the league entering a tri-match against Buckeye Valley and Columbus Academy on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Oakhaven. Last year in the CCL, they finished second to DeSales.
"The teams (in the MSL-Ohio) are nice, it's still competitive and we're playing on nice courses," sophomore Emily Bruce said. "We work together as a team, and we also play against each other. You still want (your teammates) to do well, but you want to do better. That's why you push each other, and that helps make everyone better."
The Unicorns defeated Bexley 186-195 in a nine-hole match Sept. 5 at Blacklick Woods behind a 43 from junior Kate Kramer and a 45 from Bruce.
"Sometimes I get in my own head a lot," Kramer said. "When I hit a bad shot, sometimes things go downhill, but (coach Chris Ditello) says you can't let bad shots get to you. You should play the course and not your opponent."
The Unicorns shot 353 to win the MSL-Ohio preseason tournament Aug. 6 at Airport, ahead of Bexley (362), Buckeye Valley (399), Worthington Christian (400) and Academy (411). Grandview and Whitehall do not have teams and Wellington did not have a team score.
The league postseason tournament is Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Airport.
"We're taking things one swing at a time, one hole at a time and one match at a time," Ditello said. "We can't look past anyone. Every match matters."
The regular season is a warm-up for the Unicorns' primary goal: Postseason success. Last fall, CSG just missed qualifying for the Division II state tournament, scoring a 382 at district at Darby Creek to place third behind champion Bloom-Carroll (379). The Bulldogs won a fifth-score tiebreaker against Worthington Christian (379) to earn the only state berth.
"We're dedicated, we have a goal and we're trying to get there," Bruce said. "Our goal is to get to state. We only missed it by three strokes last year and we think we have a good chance. We have been pushing ourselves to do our very best."
Junior Caroline Kromalic, freshman Emma Kim and senior Vera Mehra round out the top five for the Unicorns.
The postseason begins with a sectional tournament Sept. 23 at Blacklick Woods or Sept. 25 at Mill Creek. The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams from both sectionals advance to district Sept. 30 at Darby Creek.
At district, the top team and top individual not on that team qualify for state Oct. 11 and 12 on Ohio State's Gray Course.
"We made it out of sectional all three years I have been here," said Ditello, who is in his fourth season. "We almost made it state last year and it's my goal and their goal to make it there this year. It's the goal that we always defer to because it's so important."
Soccer squad out to good start
The soccer team was 5-3 overall after defeating Tree of Life 4-2 on Sept. 9 and before playing Cristo Rey on Sept. 11.
The Unicorns improved to 2-1 in the MSL-Ohio by defeating Whitehall 6-0 on Sept. 7. Carmen Albrecht, Addie Arthur, Fu Xiang Maynard, Eva Nicolosi, Carly Priest and Emma Spangler all scored.
Blair Glimcher scored in a 1-0 league win over Zanesville Rosecrans on Sept. 4.
Morse leads runners at McGowan Invite
Sabrina Morse finished 79th in 23 minutes, 7.9 seconds to lead the cross country team in the Division II race of the McGowan Invitational on Sept. 7 at Watkins Memorial.
The Unicorns finished 19th (513 points) of 25 teams, behind champion Granville (56).
Lauren Sloan (88th, 23:32.1), Katrina D'Arms (130th, 24:37.4), Molly Pawlik (131st, 24:38.1), Katie Pawlik (186th, 26:14.0) also scored for CSG.
