The return of most of its lineup gave the Ready girls tennis team a baseline of experience as it looked to improve on last season's 3-10 finish.

Adding freshman Kayla Thomas to the mix has aided that pursuit.

Senior Lindsay Dickerson has rotated between first singles and playing first doubles with junior Jenna Ruth, with Thomas seeing action at first and second singles.

Ready was 3-3 overall before playing Groveport on Sept. 12.

"We're deeper," coach Dan Skuce said. "We've got a lot more options. I've been (experimenting) with our doubles (teams). We have at least three matches a week for a while coming up."

Ready is 0-2 in the CCL after losing to Watterson 5-0 on Sept. 3 and DeSales 5-0 on Sept. 10.

On Sept. 5, Ready defeated Marion-Franklin 5-0 as Thomas won at first singles, senior Emily Mathew won at second singles, senior Julianne Pece and junior Mary Tokar won at second doubles and the Red Devils forfeited the other two courts.

The Silver Knights, who also lost to Teays Valley 5-0 on Sept. 9, had their first doubles team of Dickerson and Ruth lose in three sets against DeSales.

Ready closes league play Tuesday, Sept. 17, at home against Hartley, which also is 0-2 in the CCL after losing to DeSales and Watterson by 5-0 scores. The only set the Hawks won against either of those teams was at second doubles against DeSales.

Football team set to face Lions

In its third year as an auxiliary member of the MSL-Ohio Division, the football team will play its first contest of the season against an opponent from that league Friday, Sept. 20, at Liberty Union.

The Knights were 1-1 before facing St. Charles on Sept. 13, and Liberty Union was 0-2 before playing Amanda-Clearcreek that same night.

After opening with a 24-7 victory over Genoa Area on Aug. 30, Ready lost to West Jefferson 55-24 on Sept. 6 as Roughriders running back Gabe Jones rushed for a program-record 312 yards on 26 carries and scored five touchdowns.

Quarterback Darius Parham hooked up with wide receiver Tyrese Hudson for two touchdowns for Ready. Jejuan McGowan ran for a score and Jack Foley rushed for 95 yards.

The Knights then played St. Charles for the first time since 2001.

"Hats off to the West Jefferson staff," coach Joel Cutler said. "They do things the right way. (It was a) cultural battle of who's going to swing hardest, longest, things of that nature. ... We're trying to be attentive of all the details moving forward."

Liberty Union opened with a 43-20 loss to Heath on Aug. 30 and fell 31-7 at Bloom-Carroll on Sept. 6. Freshman Cayden Carroll has been gaining experience at quarterback, completing 10 of 19 passes for 150 yards with two interceptions in Week 2.

Senior Kobe Barnett and junior Casey Fleahman have been the top running backs, with sophomore Jack Brown and senior Lonnie Lawhorn the top receiving threats. Brown had three catches for 112 yards against Bloom-Carroll.

Schedule challenges girls volleyball team

In addition to facing a tough six-match CCL schedule, the girls volleyball team has lost to Division I programs such as Grove City and Hilliard Darby and one of the area's top Division II teams in Hamilton Township.

Ready was 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the CCL before facing Hartley on Sept. 12.

"The schedule is brutal," coach Mike Kusan said. "We thought it was the right thing to do because we're going to be 0-0 on Oct. 13 (when the Division III postseason begins). It's hard to see (the progress) because the competition doesn't change."

In the offseason, some of the Knights' top expected returnees elected to concentrate on other sports, leaving junior outside hitter/libero Bella Illig as the top player back.

Sophomore middle hitters Megan Chesser and Simone Daniel have been key contributors offensively.

Sophomores Kaitlin Harlan (defensive specialist), Claire Larger (setter) and Kaitlyn Lancia (outside hitter) and freshmen Jayden Deal (outside hitter) and Bryn Whitmer (defensive specialist) also have been key contributors.

"At times they look good," Kusan said. "We took a set from Hartley (on Sept. 3) and we hadn't done that since I came back (for the 2016 season)."
